Assignment – 1

Advertising

Winter 2021

 You are required to pick two (separate) TV commercials (no print ads):
1. One ad depicting information function; and
2. The other one depicting persuasion function
 You can choose a Social Media ad if it is posted by their own (exclusive) company channel
(handle) run by the brand for example social media ad of Gillette from Gillette’s
YouTube/Facebook page itself.
 Make sure the brand is renowned in Pakistan (in case you are picking an international ad).
 It is an individual assignment.
 You are not allowed to pick any ad already shown until now.
 You are not allowed to pick persuasive informative or informative persuasive ad.
 Keep the entire discussion (Chhoti se chhoti) in your mind. I would suggest you to go through
your notes (if you can rely on them) or the lecture recordings before attempting this assignment.

Submission Method:

 You have to submit a DOC or DOCx file (NO PDFs), saved with your name (and NOT like
Microsoft file or finaaaaaalllllllll). You have to select one ad and take screenshot of it (in such a
way that I can see the thumbnail of the video) through print screen option. Paste it in the
document with a proper URL beneath the thumbnail image. Under the URL, explain why this ad
(in your views) perform the stated function. Make sure the URL pasted is functioning in such a
way that after me clicking on it, I am taken directly to that video (make sure you delete your cache
memory to avoid any problems). Repeat the process for the second ad. Do give respective
headings of information function and persuasion function. You can find the template on the
next page.
 If you are planning on picking a cell phone commercial for Information function, please make sure
it is not “A REVIEW or UNPACKING or UNBOXING” video.
 For persuasion function, do mention the appeal you are using. I am giving the link below that will
help you selecting an appeal. Pick one wisely and explain it well in the assignment by relating it
with the ad:

(Make sure you clearly mention the link between the appeals and how can you find it in the ad).
 Once you are done with the assignment and you have saved it with your name, email me on
advertisingmkt303@gmail.com (do not email me on my personal address). In subject, write down
your name and section. I do not need any ID or other information in subject section of the email.

P.S. Make sure you find TWO DIFFERENT ADS for both the functions. Also, keep the definitions in mind.
