GEOMETRICAL SOLIDS (Copy right IMTC-C)

Material description:.
There are ten solids made of wood, all in blue and the measurements are based
on 10cm and 6 cm. The different solids are:
i. Cube
ii. Cuboid or rectangular prism
iii. Triangular prism
iv. Three sided pyramid
v. Four sided pyramid
vi. Cone
vii. Cylinder
viii. Sphere
ix. Ellipsoid
x. Ovoid

There is also a transparent container in which there are five geometrical cards in the
form of the shapes they represent:
Square: 6cm by 6cm
Rectangle: 10cm by 6 cm
Circle: Diameter -6 cm
Equilateral triangle: 6cm by 6cm by 6cm
Isosceles triangle: 10 cm by 10 cm by 6 cm
They all have a blue outline about 1mm wide.

The special characteristics:

They lend themselves to abstract (partial) pairing.

Display:
They are displayed after the Geometrical cabinet and Cards
The three curvilinear solids are displayed over wooden rings as they are not
stable.
The transparent container is displayed to the right of the solids.
They are displayed in four rows:
1. Cube( in the front), triangular prism ( in the middle), rectangular prism ( at
the back)
2. Three sided pyramid ( in the front) , four sided pyramid
3. Cone ( front), cylinder ( behind)
4. Sphere (front), ovoid ( middle) , ellipsoid ( back)- on their rings.

INVITATION:

PREPARATION:

1
PRESENTATION: (individual activity by individual presentation)

POINT OF INTEREST:

The resulting interesting shapes which he may find resemble other familiar constructions
or objects.

DIRECT AIM:

To help the child become conscious of the fundamental geometrical solids in particular
and thus of three dimensional shapes in general by means of his visual sense and the
stereognostic sense.

INDIRECT AIM:

To help the child prepare himself for a systematic study of solid geometry and pave way
for different forms of art such as architecture, sculpture etc.

AGE OF PRESENTATION:
After he has had enough experience working with the Geometrical Insets .

EXERCISES: (to be written)

PURPOSE SERVED
This helps the child become conscious of each solid systematically and acquire a deeper
and analytical knowledge of them. Also we help the child to become conscious that
curvilinear solids have no faces.

GEOMETRICAL SOLIDS AND CARDS

INVITATION:
PREPARATION:

PRESENTATION: ( individual activity by individual presentation )

Note:
 As he is pairing he may realise that at least two of the solids do not have cards
or a card may not have a solid

2
 For certain solids he may need our suggestion to turn certain solids so that he
can pair. e.g. the cuboid which has the square and the rectangular faces.

POINT OF INTEREST:
Placing the solids over the cards.

PURPOSE SERVED:
He gets to see the two dimensional faces of the solids more consciously owing to
the cards.

EXERCISES:( to be written)

Activity 1:

PURPOSE SERVED:

We try to help the child to know which of the solids have common faces. We try to give
an opportunity to do a comparative study from the point of view of each of these shapes
and thus to the clarity.

Activity 2: ( to be written )
PURPOSE SERVED:

This is like the crown of all the activities he has done with the solids as he gets a
complete experience with regard to each face /shape of the solid. His experience is
consolidated if he knows the names of the solid.

Name lessons:

Two names are given at a time for the ordinary name lessons:
cube , sphere
cuboid , cone
cylinder, three sided prism
ellipsoid, four sided pyramid
ovoid, triangular pyramid

Special name lessons for :

ellipsoid, ovoid
triangular prism, rectangular prism
three sided pyramid, four sided pyramid.

3
During the name lesson one of the characteristic features will be to feel the solids in
order to have the stereognostic experience and relate the name to it.

STEREOGNOSTIC EXERCISES WITH THE GEOMETRICAL SOLIDS

It can be presented to two children so that they can take over and be independent of
the adult. They are presented after the children know the names of all the solids.

Activity 1:

Presentation:

Note:
 When it offered to two children one of the children can take the role of the adult
and carry out the activity.
