assessment as a tool for sustainability; and
Apply the learned concepts to real situation
Tools of Sustainability in Tourism
Environmental Impact Assessment

What is EIA?
EIA
- a process that involves predicting and evaluating the
likely impacts of a project (including cumulative impacts)
on the environment during construction, commissioning,
operation, and abandonment
- Includes designing appropriate preventive, mitigating,
and enhancement measures addressing these
consequences to protect the environment and the
community’s welfare
PD No. 1586
IEE Initial Environmental Examination

- Is a preliminary environmental review of reasonably

foreseeable impacts of proposed activity to determine
the adverse impacts whether an EIA is required or not
Projects
• Food and food by-products • Buildings and subdivisions
• Roads and bridges (<10 lots)
• Housing projects (<10 houses)
• Resort and hotel (<12 rooms)
• Other leisure tourism projects
IEE versus EIA Difference
IEE EIA
• Preliminary Environmental • Full Environmental
Review Assessment
• For small scale project • For large scale projects
• Low cost projects • High cost projects
• Project with no significant • Projects with significant
adverse impacts adverse impacts
Potential impacts for projects include:
1. Consistency with land use (residential, commercial, industrial,
protected areas, etc)
2. Disturbance to wildlife due to vegetation clearing (forestland,
grassland, mangrove, wetland, etc)
3. Change in surface land for/topography/slope (flat, gently sloping
to rolling, steep)
4. Soil erosion (hazard-prone or not)
5. Soil contamination due to improper solid waste disposal
6. Impairment of visual aesthetics
7. Devaluation of land values
8. Water quality degradation
Potential impacts for projects include:
9. Competition in water use
10. Depletion of water resources
11. Increased occurrence of flooding
12. Air quality degradation
13. Nuisance due to noise generation
14. Displacement of residents in the project site and within its
vicinity
15. Displacement of indigenous people
16. Enhanced employment and/or livelihood opportunities
Increased revenues for LGU
