CHAPTER (1)

INTRODUCTION
1.1 General

Concrete and reinforced concrete are used as building construction materials in

every country. Reinforced concrete is a dominant structural material in engineered
construction. The universal nature of reinforced concrete construction stems from the
wide availability of reinforcing bars and of the constituents of concrete (gravel or
crushed rock, sand, water, and cement), from the relatively simple skills required in
concrete construction, and from the economy of reinforced concrete compared with
other forms of construction. Plain concrete and reinforced concrete are used in
buildings of all sorts, underground structures, water tanks, wind turbine foundations
and towers, offshore oil exploration and production structures, dams, bridges, and
even ships.
The term shear wall is used to describe a wall that resists lateral wind or
earthquake loads acting parallel to the plane of the wall in addition to the gravity
loads from the floors and roof adjacent to the wall. Such walls are referred to as
structural walls.
A moment resistant frame is a special type of frame that uses rigid connections
members. This configuration is able to resist lateral and overturning forces because of
the bending moment and shear strength that inherent in its members and the
connecting joints. The proposed building includes ten-storey and it located in
Taunggyi. The analysis and design of proposed building will be done by ETABS
software.

1.2 Objectives
1. To compare the result of special and intermediate MRF from analysis and
design of ten-storey R.C building
2. To prevent building collapse during earthquake
3. To understand more about different behavior of lateral load effect on these
frame
1.3 Scopes
1. Use shear walls to transfer the earthquake forces
2. Analyze the building by ETABS
3. Use ACI 318-14 for gravity loads and UBC-97 for lateral loads

1.4 Implementation
1. Study on Background Theory
2. Draw the Proposed Drawings by Auto CAD
3. Load Consideration
4. Analysis and Design for Buildings
5. Compare the results

1.4 Outline of the study

The study includes the comparison of the behavior of special and intermediate
moment resistant frames. This study include five chapters , one is introduction of
thesis , chapter two is background theory , three is data preparation , chapter four is
analysis and design for building and the last is conclusion and discussion.
