Scholarship Essay

My name is Jack Smude and I am currently in eleventh grade at Pierz Healy High School.

I am planning on attending college after I graduate high school. I want my major to be in

radiologic technology. I want to be in this major because there is currently a severe staffing

shortage and I have always wanted to go into the medical field. I am a good candidate for this

scholarship because I have an impressive gpa and I am always focused on school work.

One reason I believe a radiology major would be a good path for me is because my mom

works in a radiology department. She teaches me some of the day to day operations that the

radiology technicians perform. She also teaches me some of the terminology and rules they must

follow. My mom is not a technician, but she knows a lot about them because she works directly

with them and patients every day. I have been working as a dietary aide in a long term care and

hospital setting for six months now. I believe this employment has allowed me to gain

knowledge about the medical field in general. I work directly with the long term care residents

assisting them with meals and occasionally assisting the hospital patients with meals.

My future plans after high school is to go to a four year program for radiologic

technology. The first two years of the course are the classes I am required to take and I am also

expected to become an intern at any facility with the adequate equipment. The second two years

consist of more field specific classes and also a clinical experience. The clinical experience is

only allowed to be done at certain facilities at which they have the proper equipment and training

to fully prepare me for the workforce. I may decide later on to go back to school to achieve a full

radiologist degree. They have to do four years of medical school and then another four years of

radiology training. It sounds like too much schooling for me right now, so I may decide to go

back and do it later if I get bored with the tech job. I plan on working at the current facility I

work at, just transfer to the radiology department. It would show the company that I am loyal to

them and could benefit me financially.

One reason that I am a good candidate for this scholarship is because I have a great

interest in the medical field and I am very motivated to get a degree. Another reason I am a good

candidate is because my mom has taught me a lot about the radiology tech profession and I

believe it would be fairly easy to catch on to the education and duties. I would benefit greatly

from this scholarship because it would help me pay for some of the expensive education it

requires to become a member of the medical field. Thank you for considering me for this
