WORLD SITUATION.

PLANET EARTH IN
DANGER

You have certainly heard about many environmental problems that endanger the
Earth. The following text is about this problem. Read it carefully.
What causes global warming?

Global warming is happening because we are putting too much carbon dioxide
into the air. Most of the carbon dioxide comes from cars, factories and homes.
How does carbon dioxide make the earth warmer?

The sun heats the earth. Carbon dioxide traps the heat so it can’t leave the
atmosphere. When there is a lot of carbon dioxide, it traps more heat, so the

earth is getting hotter.

Why does it matter that the earth is getting hotter?

The earth is already warmer than it was 100 years ago.


The icecaps in the North Polo are starting to melt because of the higher temperatures.
As the icecaps melt, the sea level rises. This means that a lot of towns and cities around
the world will be flooded.

What other problems are there?

Some areas will become drier, like North America, Brazil and Russia. If the
temperatures rise by only one or two degrees, it will be too hot to grow crops in these
countries.

What can we do?

We all need to save energy so that we make less carbon dioxide. Don’t do
anything that wastes energy. Remember to turn off lights when you leave a room. If you
can, walk to school or use your bike. Don’t ask your parents to take you by car.
