ENERGY
What do you think it means?
Energy
Capacity to do work.
All living things require energy.
Can be transformed.
Cannot be recycled.
BIOENERGETICS
The study of energy in living systems and the
organisms that utilize them.

All organisms use energy to grow, respond,

reproduce, maintain homeostasis and
adapt.
ABOUT
BIOENERGETICS:
1 Sunlight is the main energy souce on Earth

Only plants, some algae, and certain bacteria

2 can capture energy from the sunlight or
chemicals and use the energy to produce food

Those organisms are called autotrophs also called

2.5 producers becasue they produce their own food.
TYPES OF
PRODUCERS
Autotrophs and Chemotrophs
AUTOTROPHS
Organisms that gets energy directly from
the sun to make their own food through the
process of photosynthesis.
CHEMOTROPHS
Organisms that use energy from
chemicals to produce energy
without light through chemosynthesis.
Organisms use chemical energy to
produce carbohydrates
ABOUT
BIOENERGETICS:
There are many organisms such as animals, fungi, and
1 many bacteria, which cannot harness energy directly
from the physical environment as autotrophs do.

These organisms rely on other organisms

2 for their energy and food supply.

They are called heterotrophs or

2.5 consumers.
TYPES OF
HETEROTROPHS
Heterotrophs are classified according to their food preference.
HERBIVORES

They eat
plants only.
CARNIVORES

Eat meats or other

animals only.
OMNIVORES

Eat both plants

and animals
DETRIVORES

Feed on plants and

animal remains and
other dead matter
DECOMPOSERS

Break down
organic matter.
PHOTOSYNTHESIS
One of the most vital
biochemical processes since
almost all the living organisms
depend on it for nutrition
directly or indirectly.

The process of converting light

energy into chemical energy
by living organisms.
TWO STAGES OF PHOTOSYNTHESIS

LIGHT-DEPENDENT LIGHT-INDEPENDENT
REACTIONS REACTIONS
It requires sunlight. The The energized electrons
energy from sunlight is provide the energy to
absorbed by chlorophyll form carbohydrates
and converted it to from carbon dioxide
chemical energy molecules

Cellular
Respiration
We all need energy to function and we
get this energy from the food we eat.
The most efficient way for cells to
harvest energy stored in food is through
cellular respiration.

Cellular
Respiration
Cellular respiration is the process that
releases energy by breaking down food
molecules in the presence of oxygen.

FOOD
CHAIN
Illustrates that energy stored
by producers can be passed
through an ecosystem. This is
a series of steps in which
organisms transfer energy by
eating and being eaten.

FOOD WEBS

Show feeding relationships

among various organisms in an
ecosystem form a network of
interactions. A food web links
all the food chains in an
ecosystem together.
