PHILIPPINES PRESIDENT RODRIGO DUTERTE

TO RUN FOR SENATOR IN 2022 ELECTION,
RULING OUT RACE AGAINST DAUGHTER.
The move ends the speculation that Duterte would run for vice president against his daughter Sara Duterte-Carpio.

Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte will run for senator in next year’s election, his top aide has said, ending speculation that
he would run for vice president against his own daughter.

Duterte’s closest aide, Christopher “Bong” Go, a senator who is running for the presidency, told Reuters news agency on
Monday that Duterte will vie for a Senate seat in the May 2022 polls.

Go’s remarks run counter to those on Saturday by Duterte’s communications chief, who said the president would run for vice
president and challenge his daughter, Sara Duterte-Carpio, a mayor who is vying for the position.

Presidential spokesman Harry Roque also ruled that possibility out earlier on Monday.

“What I can say is the father and [the] daughter, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte and Mayor Inday Sara, love each other,” Roque
said after filing his candidacy for senator, referring to Duterte-Carpio by her nickname.

“They will never run against each other, they will never fight each other for any position,” Roque said.

The announcement comes as Monday’s deadline neared for political parties to finalise candidates, keeping voters on edge.
Candidates have until 09:00 GMT on Monday to withdraw or switch positions by way of substitution.

Duterte is not eligible to run for president again, but he can run for other posts. In the Philippines, the president and the vice
president are elected in separate contests.

Duterte’s 43-year-old daughter had been expected to run to succeed him as president due to her popularity and a clear lead in all
opinion polls this year on preferred candidates.

Duterte-Carpio’s decision to seek the country’s number two job came as a surprise as she had led opinion polls throughout this year.

It is not yet clear who Duterte-Carpio will run with. Shortly after her candidacy papers were filed by a representative, the political
party of Ferdinand Marcos Jr, the son and namesake of the late Philippine strongman who has registered to run for president,
adopted Duterte-Carpio as its vice presidential choice.

The Philippines recorded an additional 2,227 new cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the Department of Health (DOH) said on
Sunday, Nov. 21.

From Nov. 11 to 20, the Philippines had recorded less than 2,000 cases. The last time that the country recorded over 2,000 cases was on
Nov. 10 with 2,646 infections then.

“Ating pinapaalalahan ang lahat na huwag maging kampante at maging mapagmatyag sa banta ng COVID-19. Ugaliing sumunod sa
minimum public health standards at laging magsuot ng facemask na may face shield, mag physical distancing, at maghugas ng kamay
(We remind everyone not to be complacent and remain vigilant against COVID-19. Make it a habit to adhere to the minimum public
health standards—always wear a face mask and face shield, observe physical distancing, and frequently wash your hands),” the DOH
said.

“Nakasalalay sa kilos ng bawat isa sa atin ang posibleng pagbaba o pagtaas ng kaso ng COVID-19 sa ating bansa sa susunod na mga
araw (The possible decrease or increase of COVID-19 cases in our country in the coming days depends on our actions),” it furthered.

Based on the DOH latest case update, the country now has 2,826,410 total reported COVID-19 cases since last year. Of the total, 0.7
percent or 21,101 are still active or those who are still undergoing treatment.

Of the active cases, 56.9 percent of them have mild symptoms, 4.4 percent were asymptomatic, 20.30 percent have moderate
symptoms, 13 percent were severe cases, and 5.5 percent were in critical condition.

The number of recoveries also climbed by 3,152 to 2,758,235 –which accounts for 97.6 percent of the country’s overall case count.

However, the death toll also increased to 47,074 or 1.67 percent of the case total after 175 more fatalities were logged.

TONY BISHOP TO REPLACE NBA VET SHABAZZ

MUHAMMAD AS MERALCO'S IMPORT

Published November 21, 2021, 1:52 PM by Jonas Terrado

Globetrotting Tony Bishop will take the place of former NBA player Shabazz Muhammad as Meralco’s import for the season-
ending PBA Governors’ Cup, coach Norman Black confirmed Sunday, Nov. 21.

Black said Muhammad, who once played for the Minnesota Timberwolves, had to beg off at the last minute due to a “family
emergency,” prompting the Bolts to secure the services of the 32-year-old Bishop.

Bishop had been on Meralco’s radar until Muhammad agreed to reinforce the team for the second conference.

“Tony was one of the imports we’ve been talking to until Shabazz agreed to play for us,” said Black.

Bishop played college ball at Richland College from 2007 to 2009 before moving to Texas State for two more seasons.

He had pro stints in Denmark, Lithuania, Germany, Japan, Romania and Puerto Rico, Bishop’s most recent stop.

An American-born Panamanian, Bishop also represented the Central American nation in several FIBA competitions, namely the
2016 Centrobasket and the 2017 AmeriCup.

Black said Bishop was four days removed from playing for Mets de Guaynabo where he was a teammate of ex-PBA and San Miguel
Alab Pilipinas reinforcement Renaldo Balkman.

The Bolts initially got Muhammad to suit up for the conference, with resident import Allen Durham playing for the Ryukyu Golden
Kings in Japan’s B.League.

It looked like Muhammad was already set to fly to Manila as he already secured a visa at the Philippine consulate in California.

But Black got a call from Muhammad’s agent, saying that the five-year NBA veteran had to back out.

WEATHER FORECAST

FAIR WEATHER WITH CHANCES OF RAIN

SHOWERS, THUNDERSTORMS TO PREVAIL
ACROSS PH
Published November 21, 2021, 5:03 PM by Ellalyn De Vera-Ruiz

The northeast monsoon, locally called “amihan,” and easterlies will be the dominant weather systems that may bring fair
weather conditions across most parts of the country in the next 24 hours, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and
Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 21.

PAGASA said partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light monsoon rains may prevail over Batanes, Ilocos Norte, Abra, and
Cagayan.

Likewise, Metro Manila and the rest of the country may experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or
thunderstorms.

Although mostly fair weather conditions are seen to prevail, PAGASA still advised the public to stay vigilant as severe
thunderstorms may sometimes trigger flooding or landslides.

Moreover, no gale warning is in effect over the country’s seaboards as of Sunday afternoon.

Moderate to rough seas may prevail over northern, while slight to moderate seas will likely persist over the rest of the country.

As such, sea travel is safe even for fisherfolk and others with small sea vessels, PAGASA said.
