GATHERING AROUND THE WORD

Opening Prayer
Call to Worship
One: Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly being, ascribe to the Lord glory and
strength.
All: Ascribe to the Lord the glory of God’s name; worship the Lord in
holy splendor.
One: The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.
All: May the Lord give strength to God’s people! May the Lord bless
God’s people with peace!
One: Let us worship God!
Hymn
Morning Has Broken
Morning has broken Like the first morning,
Blackbird has spoken Like the first bird.
Praise for the singing! Praise for the morning!
Praise for them, springing Fresh from the Word!
Sweet the rain’s new fall Sunlit from heaven,
Like the first dewfall On the first grass.
Praise for the sweetness Of the wet garden,
Sprung in completeness Where his feet pass.

2
Mine is the sunlight! Mine is the morning
Born of the one light Eden saw play!
Praise with elation, Praise every morning,
God’s re-creation Of the new day!
Prayer of Confession
You, who in Christ have assured redemption, hear our confession and
forgive our sin. Christ proclaims your goodwill toward all people, yet we
pursue vengeance. Those who mourn go uncomforted, as warfare
continues in the earth. Captives without number await deliverance while
we take freedom for granted. The afflicted await some sign of good news.
Amid the ruin of cities and the clamor of protesting voices, we confess our
disobedience. Save your people, O God, and cleanse us of our sin, for the
sake of your Anointed One, Jesus Christ.
Silent Confession
Assurance of Pardon
One: Recall John’s words, “I baptize you with water; but he who is mightier than
I is coming . . . (who) will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.”
As we repent our wickedness, Christ, who knows the intents of our hearts,
cleanses us of all sin. The threshing floor is stirred and sifted so the wheat
can be gathered. May the unquenchable fire of the Spirit purge our beings
and prepare us for the reign of God.
All: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven!

Reading from the Epistles
Acts 8:14-17
Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word
of God, they sent Peter and John to them. 15 The two went down and prayed for
them that they might receive the Holy Spirit 16 (for as yet the Spirit had not come
upon any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus).
17 Then Peter and John laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy
Spirit.

Reading from the Gospel

Luke 3:15-17, 21-22
As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts
concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, 16 John answered all of
them by saying, “I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is
coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you
with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his
threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn
with unquenchable fire.” 21 Now when all the people were baptized, and when
Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, 22 and
the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came
from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”

Reaffirmation of the Baptismal Covenant
Affirmation of Faith The Apostle’s Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus
Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of
the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried;
he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended
into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from
thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy
Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of
sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. AMEN.

Hymn
Here I Am, Lord
I, the Lord of sea and sky, I have heard My people cry
All who dwell in deepest sin My hand will save.
I who made the stars of night, I will make their darkness bright.
Who will bear My light to them? Whom shall I send?

5
Refrain
Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night
I will go, Lord, if You lead me. I will hold Your people in my heart.
I, the Lord of snow and rain, I have borne My people's pain.
I have wept for love of them, They turn away.
I will break their hearts of stone, Give them hearts of love alone.
I will speak My word to them. Whom shall I send?
refrain
I, the Lord of wind and flame, I will tend the poor and lame.
I will set a feast for them, My hand will save.
