TSC&HF CELEBRATES 100 ISSUES

I
n the winter of 2004, three toy
soldier collectors sat together in
the cafeteria at a hobby show in
Birmingham, UK. Over steaming
paper cups of tea – and with not a little
excitement – they hatched the plan for
a brand-new magazine. Among the
ambitions they set forth for the new
title was it should throw a vivid spotlight
on the exciting new releases from top
toy soldier makers and in particular the
burgeoning outputs of leading British
companies.
Those three collectors were Mark
Avery, until very recently the editor
of this publication; Ken Jackson, the
former proprietor of connoisseur figure
company Maison Militaire; and Rob
Hendrie, a leading hobby writer and toy
soldier enthusiast.
One hundred issues later and with
the magazine entering an exciting new
phase in its evolution, the instincts
of the ‘founding three’ that there was
demand within the hobby for a new title
have been wholly justified.

Early Days
“After the Birmingham show we
formed a limited company called
KRM Publishing to launch the new
magazine,” Mark explained. “Ken opted
to inject some cash into the project
as a silent partner, Rob invested some
money and looked after editorial and
subscriptions, and I took responsibility
for editorial, advertising, securing a
designer and print management.”

This edition marked an important step
in the evolution of the magazine. The
most obvious of these can be seen in
the change to the masthead: from this
issue forward, the magazine has been
titled Toy Soldier Collector & Historical

scope of its content. This issue also
marked the farewell of Mark Avery as
editor after some fifteen years in the

it a very positive experience working
with Mark, whose sound editorial
judgement and encouraging words
helped to bring out the best in all of us.

The Israeli government, however, was not aware of the
imminent threat. Intelligence considered it unlikely that
either Egypt or Syria would attack in 1973. A warning by King

attack that the Israeli authorities recognised that war was
imminent, and they mobilised their reserves.

The Israeli commanders on the Golan Heights, however, had

Smaller pieces do not have as much detail as some larger-

require assembly, being mounted onto bases, priming and
