look because the city did not want us to leave. But finding
affordable space was near impossible because Malden now
fetches Boston real estate prices.”
Matt said, “I decided to see if I could afford to buy

I found and bought a building in the town I live in.” The old

shop feel to it with a small storefront with models in the
window. It is a long narrow building that opens up into our

Hobby Bunker is open daily. If a hobbyist can’t visit the

n the winter of 2004, three toy
soldier collectors sat together in
the cafeteria at a hobby show in
Birmingham, UK. Over steaming
paper cups of tea – and with not a little
excitement – they hatched the plan for
a brand-new magazine. Among the
ambitions they set forth for the new
title was it should throw a vivid spotlight
on the exciting new releases from top
toy soldier makers and in particular the
burgeoning outputs of leading British
companies.
Those three collectors were Mark
Avery, until very recently the editor
of this publication; Ken Jackson, the
former proprietor of connoisseur figure
company Maison Militaire; and Rob
Hendrie, a leading hobby writer and toy
soldier enthusiast.
One hundred issues later and with
the magazine entering an exciting new
phase in its evolution, the instincts
of the ‘founding three’ that there was
demand within the hobby for a new title
have been wholly justified.
Early Days
“After the Birmingham show we
formed a limited company called
KRM Publishing to launch the new
magazine,” Mark explained. “Ken opted
to inject some cash into the project
as a silent partner, Rob invested some
money and looked after editorial and
subscriptions, and I took responsibility
for editorial, advertising, securing a
designer and print management.”

is a number of nicely crafted figures representing multiple

Smaller pieces do not have as much detail as some larger-

require assembly, being mounted onto bases, priming and
painting. Some people might be intimidated by building and
painting their own figures or they simply don’t have the time.
However, there are a few companies offering finished 28mm
