A. Readings/Discussions

Multiplying decimals is made easy if you have a thorough understanding on multiplying

whole numbers and that you have mastered the basic multiplication facts.
To multiply decimals with factors up to 2 decimals places, multiply them like whole
numbers. Then count the number of decimal places in the factors and indicate the same
number of decimal places in the product.
Task 1. Read the problem and answer the questions that follow.

Mang Ramon harvests 0.8

kilogram of eggplants in his
backyard. His wife cooks 0.4
kilogram of them for breakfast.
How many eggplants does his
wife cook?

Questions:
1. How many kilograms of eggplants does Mang Ramon harvest?
2. What part of the eggplants does his wife cook?
3. How many kilograms of eggplants does his wife cook?

Discussion for Task 1:

These are the answers to the question above:
1. Mang Ramon harvests 0.8 kilogram of eggplants.
2. His wife cooks 0.4 kilogram of the eggplants harvested.
3. To find the number of kilograms of eggplants that his wife cooks,
multiply 0.8 by 0.4.

1
Here are the steps to follow:
1. Write the factors in vertical form.
0.8
_x 0.4_
2. Multiply like you do with whole numbers.
0.8
_x 0.4_
32
3. Count the number of decimal places in the factors.
0.8 1 decimal place
2 decimal places in the factors
_x 0.4_ 1 decimal place
32

4. Indicate the same number of decimal places in the product.

0.8 1 decimal place
2 decimal places in the factors
_x 0.4_ 1 decimal place
0.32 2 decimal places also in the product
Write 0 after the decimal point to indicate that there is no
whole number.
Answer: His wife cooks 0.32 kilogram of eggplants.

Task 2. Read and analyze the problem below.

Anton walks 0.95 of a

kilometer to school.
Elena walks 0.3 times
as far. How far does
Elena walk to school?

Questions:
1. What part of a kilometer does Anton walk to school?
2. How many times does Elena walk as far as Anton?
3. How far does Elena walk to school?

Discussion for Task 2:

Here are the answers to the questions above:
1. Anton walks 0.95 of a kilometer in going to school.
2. Elena walks 0.3 times as far as Anton.
3. To get the answer on how far Elena walks to school, multiply 0.95 by 0.3.

2
Follow these steps:
1. Write the factors in vertical form.
0.95
_x 0.3_

2. Multiply like you do with whole numbers.

0.95
_x 0.3_
285 3 x 5 = 15; (Bring down 5, regroup 1)
3 x 9 = 27; 27 + 1 = 28
3. Count the number of decimal places in the factors.
0.95 2 decimal places
3 decimal places in the factors
_x 0.3_ 1 decimal place
285
4. Indicate the same number of decimal places in the product.
0.95 2 decimal places
3 decimal places in the factors
_x 0.3_ 1 decimal place
0.285 3 decimal places also in the product
Write 0 after the decimal point to indicate that there is no
whole number.
Answer: Elena walks 0.285 kilometer to school.

Task 3. Read the story problem below and analyze it.

Arnold has a small

garden plot. What is the
area if the length is 0.85
meter and the width is 0.45
meter?

Questions:
1. What is the length of the garden?
2. What is the width?
3. What is its area?

Discussion for Task 3:

Here are the answers to the questions above:
1. The length of the garden is 0.85 meter.
2. The width of the garden is 0.45 meter.

3
3. To find its area, we are going to multiply the length by its width.
Multiply: 0.85 by 0.45
Follow the steps below:
1. Write the factors in vertical form.
0.85
_x 0.45_

2. Multiply like you do with whole numbers.

0.85
_x 0.45_
425
Add the partial products
+ 340__
3825
3. Count the number of decimal places in the factors.
0.85 2 decimal places
4 decimal places in the factors
_x 0.45_ 2 decimal places
425
+ 340__
0.3825 4 decimal places also in the product
Write 0 after the decimal point to indicate that there
is no whole number.

Answer: The area of the garden plot is 0.3825 square meter.

B. Exercises
