Zach bought 5 packs of sugar. Each pack weighs 2.5 kilogram. How many
kilograms of sugar did he buy in all?

Would you like to know if how many

kilograms are there in 5 packs?
Here’s the solution:
Example 1
Step 1: Write the factors in vertical form.
2.5 - factors
x5 -

Step 2: Multiply the decimal and the whole number. Start from the last or utmost digit to the left.
2.5 ---- whole number with a decimal
x 5 --- whole number
125
Step 3: Count the number of decimal places in the multiplicand. Put the decimal point in the product
as shown below.
2.5 ---1 decimal place
x 5 --- no decimal place since it’s a whole number
12.5 --- 1 decimal place only

Notice that the number of decimal places is equal to the sum of the number of
decimal places in both factors.

Answer: Chris bought 12.5 kg of sugar.

Example 2. Solve for the value of N in this number sentence.
0.15 x 12 = N 1
Step 1: Write the factors in vertical form and align the decimal point.
0.15 - decimal with two place values
x 12 - whole number

Step 2: Multiply the decimal and the whole number.

0.15
x 12
030
+ 015_

Step 3: Count the number of decimal places. Put the decimal point in the product as shown below.
0.15 --- 2 decimal places
x 12 --- no decimal place
01.80
030
+ 015_
01.80 or 1.8 ------- one decimal place since we omitted the last zero digit
Answer: 1.8

Note: you may remove unnecessary zeros (in the left and the right extremes) that is, before the
whole number and after the last non-zero digit in decimal

Key to Corrections

A.Apply your skills

1. whole – numbers that do not have decimals, no points. (e.g. 1,2,3,4,5 and so. on.)
2. multiply – the operation to use
3. count – you will count the decimal numbers after the decimal point.
4. places – where to put the decimal point according to the given decimal numbers.
5. sum – the sub-total will be added to get the total product.

B. 1 – carry 1 since 5 x 3 is 15.

1. E - 25
x 0.3
7.5 – one decimal place only since there is one decimal place in the multiplier (0.3).

4 - carry 4 since 9 x 5 is 45.

2. B - 65
x 0.9
58.5 – 9 x 6 is 54, add the carried number 4 is equal to 58 so, the product is 58.5
since there is only 1 decimal place in given multiplier 0.9.

3 – carry 3 since 6 x 5 is 30.

3. C - 36
x 0.5
18.0 – the answer is whole number because 0 is in the decimal place, from 5 x 3
equals to 15 plus 3 the carried number so, the product is 18.0 or 18.

4. A - 84 4x2=8
x 0.2 8 x 2 = 16
16.8- the product since there is only 1 decimal place in the given factors.

4 – carry 4 since 7 x 6 is equal to 42.

5. D – 36
x 0.7
25.2 – 7 x 3 = 21 plus the carried number equals 25 so, the product is 25.2 since there
is 1 decimal place from the given factors.
