Separation of mixtures S sheet

Mind tree: Handpicking, sieving, filtration, threshing, churning ,

sedimentation , decantation,magnetic separation

Diy : Observe pictures and write examples from day to day life
activites .
When and why do we need to separate mixtures?
• when we need to remove impurities or harmful components
from the mixtures (eg: stones from rice)
• when the useful component has to be separated from other
components (eg: petrol from petroleum)
• when a substance has to be obtained in highly pure form (eg:
gold from gold mines)
 Separation method to be adopted depends on the
properties of the components.
 Handpicking – For smaller quantities containing particles
reasonably large in size to be recognized can be picked by
hand
 Winnowing – Adopted to separate lighter solids from
heavier ones
 Magnetic separation – Used to separate magnetic
substance from non-magnetic substance
 Sedimentation – Settling down of suspended, insoluble
and heavy solid particles (used to separate solid – liquid
mixtures)
 Decantation- Process of pouring out the clear supernatant
liquid without disturbing the sediment
 Filtration –Process of separating insoluble solid particles
(residue) from a liquid (filtrate) by using a filter paper.
Team activity
Activity 1: The table below contains a list of mixtures. In the
right-hand column, next to each mixture, write the best
method for separating the mixture into its components.
Mixture Separation method
Salt and water
Sand and iron filings
Sand and water
Color pigments in ink
Stones and sand
Rice and stones
Oranges and apples
Sugar and iron filings

Note
 Handpicking: It is an easy physical method where stones and
other impurities are separated.
 Magnetic Separation: Iron fillings or nails are attracted by
magnet and hence they can be separated.
 Sedimentation and decantation: By washing a mixture of rice
and water, impurities float and they can be removed slowly
by pouring the water out. This is called decantation. The
heavier rice grains sink to the bottom. This is called
sedimentation.
 Filtration: Chemically, filter papers are used to remove finer
impurities. This could be done in class or lab.
Activity 2: Prepare a flow chart by showing the methods of
separation of mixtures with examples.
Assessment:
List out the ingredients present in the mixtures given below
along with the methods of separation. What is the physical
state (solid, liquid or gas) of each of the components in the
mixture?
Component State (solid liquid Dissolved or
(substance) or gas) undissolved?

 fruit salad
 sand and water
 milk and water
 rice from grains
 tea decoction from tea leaves
 impurities from rice
