a)Find the pinch temperatures and the minimum utility
requirements for the streams set out in the table by using the
two methods:

➢ T-H Diagrams,
➢ Problem table method,

b)Devise a heat exchanger network to achieve maximum energy

recovery (MER). 2

Note: Take the minimum approach temperature as 10ºK.

ANALYSIS:
➢ T-H Diagrams (Graphical method)
To draw the combined streams:

1 400 310 (400-310).2=180 kw

2 390 300 (390-300).1,8=162 kw

330 (370-330).4,0=160 kw
3 370

4 450 350 (450-350).1,0=100 kw

4
For hot combined stream:

H1=(450-400).1=50 kw
H2=(400-350).(2+1)=150 kw
H3=(350-310).2=80 kw

For cold combined stream:

H1=(330-300).1,8=54 kw
H2=(370-330).(4+1,8)=232 kw
H3=(390-370).1,8=36 kw

The pinch temperatures:

Thc,pinch=340 K
Tcc,pinch=330 K

The minimum utility requirements:

Qhu,min=48 kw
Qcu,min=6 kw

7
➢ Problem table method,

Convert the actual stream temperatures, into

adjusted temperatures, by subtracting half the
minimum temperature difference(Tmin=10 K) from
the hot stream temperatures and by adding half to
the cold stream temperatures:

= 340 K
Tcc,pinch= Tpinch-Tmin/2
= 330 K

Network Design Above the Pinch

(𝒎𝑪𝒑)𝒉 ≤ (𝒎𝑪𝒑)𝒄

Above the pinch, there are 2 hot streams and 2 cold

streams:

➢ H1 can not be matched with C2 2<1,8

➢ H1 can be matched with C3 2<4
➢ H4 can be matched with C2 1,0<1,8
➢ H4 can be matched with C3 1,0<4,0

13
➢ Match H1 and C3:

H1 stream: (400-340).2=120 kw
C3 stream : (370-330).4=160 kw

So, a heater will have to be included to provide the

remaining heat load:

160-120=40 kw

The last temperature of stream C3:

330+(120/4)=360 K
14
➢ Match H4 and C2:

H4 stream: (450-350).1=100 kw
C2 stream : (390-330).1,8=108 kw

So, a heater will have to be included to provide the

remaining heat load:

108-100=8 kw

The last temperature of stream C2:

330+(100/1,8)=385,56 K

15
Network Design Below the Pinch

(𝒎𝑪𝒑)𝒉 ≥ (𝒎𝑪𝒑)𝒄

Below the pinch, there are 1 hot stream and 1

cold stream:

➢ H1 can be matched with C2 2>1,8

16
➢ Match H1 and C2:

H1 stream: (340-310).2=60 kw
C2 stream : (330-300).1,8=54 kw

So, a cooler will have to be included for remaining

heat load:

60-54=6 kw

The last temperature of stream H1:

340-(54/2)=313 K
