NCM 114 Personal Reflections

1. How do you feel about aging? Do you dread getting older, or look forward to it?

I am anxious whenever I think about growing old. Not because I am scared of

bigger responsibilities but because I cannot accept the fact that my loved ones will

grow older and soon die. Besides this fact, I look forward to getting old. Honestly, I

am already practicing on how to become a good father and a husband. I look

forward to achieving my dreams to travel the world with my loved ones and to taste

every cuisine around the world. I see aging as both a challenge and a fear. I am

challenged by the responsibilities that I am faced with and I fear that I will fail to

accomplish those.

2. Have you ever cared for an elderly person before? If so, what was that

experience like? How do you feel about caring for older adults in your nursing

practice?

I was in 8th grade then when I cared for my great grandfather. I am in-charge

of taking his vital signs and somehow I find it stressful because sometimes I am

having a difficulty balancing it between my studies. But at the end of the day I find

it satisfying because I was able to show my love and care to my loved one.

3. What do you think about nurses who work in nursing homes? Have you ever

considered a career in gerontology? What are the positives you can see about

developing expertise in this field of nursing?

Gerontological nursing is a major challenge for nurses. Personally, I can consider

gerontology as a career because I have sympathy for older adults. It can also

significantly help my development as a nurse because in this field, we care for

people whom we can say are fragile. Nurses must be competent and skillful enough

to enter this career.

4. Have you ever seen ageism in practice? If so, think about that situation and how

it could have been turned into a positive scenario. If not, how have the situations

you have been in avoided discrimination against the elderly?

In the Philippines, I don’t think discrimination of older adults is common because

we all know that in our tradition, we care for our elders. However, discrimination to

the youth is common. Elders tend not to listen to young voices because they think

they know better. In avoiding ageism to elder, I think a family must have close ties

and practice love and care for each other.
