CHAPTER 1

Introduction

With the recent lifting of lockdown restrictions in areas of the Luzon,

especially in NCR and CALABARZON, more stores and malls are now reopening
and surely more people will come along with it (Xinhua, 2021). As the stores
reopen, more people will be able to come; however, the protocol must remain
followed by the people going outside. The most common scenario is that
accumulated consumers will be limited inside the stores while people will line up
and wait outside. That does usually happen in boutiques, especially Mercury Drug
stores, and general stores. The problem that it presents is that those who wait
outside will remain to stand, resulting in fatigue and muscle pain from prolonged
standing (Waters & Dick, 2015). This led to the interest of the researchers to
create a product that will help avoid the fatigue and muscle pain that consumers
experience for the sake of following the protocols and social distancing.

The product to that the researchers introduce is called the Ecobeat, a

combined term for eco bag and a seat. In order for the product to be effective, the
product durability and functionality will be tested (Coronado et. al, 2015), it is
expected to be able to withstand the average weight of Filipinos using Young’s
Modulus along with other tests that will be utilized by the researchers. The product
to be made by the researchers is expected to fulfill the solution for the said
problem while not being a burden to carry. It is anticipated by the researchers to
bring features to users that is multifunctional and not hindering.

Statement of the Problems

This research aims to test the durability of the product and its functionality.
Specifically, the purpose of this paper is to answer the following questions below:

1. What are the dimensions of the product?

2. What is the product’s Modulus of Elasticity?
3. What is the weight of the whole product?
4. What is the optimal and maximum weight the seat can support?
5. How much weight can the bag hold?

Objectives of the Study

In alignment to the research approach, and the statement of the problems,

the objectives of the study will be:

1. To describe the product based on the numerical values presented.

2. To identify the strengths and weaknesses of the product.
3. To determine the potential users of the product.

CHAPTER 2

Methodology

This chapter presents the research methodology that was used in the study.
It contains the following: (a) Research Method; (b) Research Instruments; (c)
Data-Gathering Procedure.

Quantitative Research is a structured way of collecting and analyzing data

obtained from different sources. Quantitative research involves the use of
computational, statistical, and mathematical tools to derive results. It is conclusive
in its purpose as it tries to quantify the problem and understand how prevalent it is
by looking for projectable results to a larger population (Babbie, 2015). Descriptive
research refers to the methods that describe the characteristics of the variables
under study. This methodology focuses on answering questions relating to “what”
than the “why” of the research subject. The primary focus of descriptive research
is to simply describe the nature of the demographics under study instead of
focusing on the “why”. Descriptive research is called an observational research
method as none of the variables in the study are influenced during the process of
the research. Descriptive research is quantitative in nature as it attempts to collect
information and statistically analyze it. Descriptive research is a powerful research
tool that permits a researcher to collect data and describe the demographics of the
same with the help of statistical analysis. Thus, it is a quantitative research
method. A research instrument is a tool used to collect, measure, and analyze
data related to the subject (Duquesne University, 2021). The primary research
instruments that the researchers will use is the Standardized Test, which is a set
of questions that will help in providing the data (Education Reform, 2015). The
researchers will provide a standardize test that is composed of 5 questions to be
filled up by 10 local respondents. The standard test will be in the form of Likert
Scale. It will be later collected and analyzed by the researchers.

The materials of the product consist of Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe hard
and Katsa for the fabric used in making the bag. Moreover, in comparing the
dimensions of the product, this has a dimension of 14 x 10.5 x 17.5 in. whereas
Large standard sized eco-bags have a dimension of 13.78 x 3.94 x 13.78 in. and
XL sized has a dimension of 16.54 x 3.94 x 12.60 in. (GreenStorage, 2019). In
comparison, the Ecobeat is larger than an XL sized eco-bag, that is to compensate
for the size of the seat.

Young’s modulus of the polyvinyl chloride 3275 MPa

(PVC) pipes
Tensile Strength (PVC) 48.25 MPa

Weight of the Ecobeat: 0.800 kg

Optimal and Maximum weight for sitting: 60 kg (optimal) ±80 kg (maximum)
Initial and Maximum weight for carrying: 5 kg (optimal) ±8 kg (maximum)

Table no. 1

With these values given, it can now be compared to the standard values.
First, the young’s modulus of the material PVC is at 3275 MPa; this value
represents the stiffness of the solid material resisting elastic deformation under
load (Helmenstine, 2019) compared to typical metals having the range between 45
GPa to 407 GPa (AmesWeb, N.D.). On the other hand, the material consisting of
plastic composition has a Tensile Strength of 48.25 MPa, meaning it is the
maximum load that it can support without being damaged (Augustyn, 2020). Next,
the weight of the ecobeat will be compared to a handbag rather than an eco-bag
as it is more used outdoors. As the Ecobeat weighs 0.8 kg, an average empty
handbag weighs only 1.1 lbs or 0.5 kg making it weigh only 0.3 kg higher than a
handbag (McDermott, 2007). For the supporting weight of the PVC seat, it can
easily support a weight of 60 kg while at maximum it supports ±80 kg showing

signs of bending. The average Filipino weight for women with a height of 154.94
cm is 43-53 kg whereas for males with height of 162.56 cm is 49-60 kg
(Pinoyathletics.info, 2021). For the Percentile, the optimal weight that the seat
support, 60 kg, with a height of 163 cm is in the 44th Percentile. While the
maximum weight that the seat support, 80 kg with the same height, is in the 94 th
Percentile (Gavin, 2020). For the carrying capacity of the bag, the optimal weight it
can support is 5 kg while the maximum is at 8 kg.

The survey results represented in figures show the positive inclination of the
participants to the product. In the process of surveying, the researchers physically
met with the participants and in compliance with the pandemic protocol, one of
them is only given the opportunity to try the Ecobeat. 7 out of 10 participants said
that they bring eco-bags whenever they are going to stores. That brings them the
interest in the idea of the Ecobeat as it can be used the same way they use their
eco-bags. For the design of the product, 4 participants rated it as excellent, 2 for
good, 2 for average, 1 for poor, and 1 for very poor. For the survey rating of the
ease of use, 7 participants rated it as excellent, 2 for good, and 1 for poor. For
their approval rating, 5 rated it excellent, 3 for good, 1 for average, and 1 for poor.
Lastly, for the survey of how likely will they think will use the product, 1 said that he
is very likely to use it, 5 said that they are likely to use it, 3 for neutral, and 1 for
very unlikely. Despite the presence of the low ratings, the overall result is still
geared towards the positive side as 6 participants ended up saying that they were
likely to use it or at least interested in what the Ecobeat can do.

CHAPTER 3

Conclusion and Recommendation

In conclusion, the Ecobeat can support the weight range from the 44 th
Percentile, 60 kg, and below up to the 94th Percentile, 80 kg. The product can also
support the average Filipino weight of 43-53 kg (for women) and 49-60 kg (for
men). Overall, the bag has a dimension of 14 x 10.5 x 17.5 in which is bigger than
the standard XL sized eco-bags and weighs 0.8 kg which is 0.3 bigger than the
average woman’s empty handbag. Despite the supported values of the product, it
has some weaknesses. The seat cannot support the overweight as it can be easily
damaged by it, the bag cannot fit large objects due to the pipes, and the bag might
be too big to carry around. Nevertheless, with the survey results, there are still
people who are interested in the idea or the design. As 7 out of 10 participants
said that they bring eco-bags whenever they are going through stores, 6 out of 10
participants said that they are likely to use the Ecobeat. The target audience or the
potential users of the product would be the people who are constant at going
outside to run for errands and buy at stores. Specifically, the product might be
interesting for audiences at the age range of 20 to 40 years old. The product may
not be perfect currently, but furthermore research and designing might help in
fulfilling its potential in the market.

Based on the findings laid out and the drawn conclusions, these are the following
recommendations:

The researchers would like to recommend the product to manufacturers

who have precision and accuracy in crafting to be able to make it more viable

For the local market to be able to use this academic research to make their
own versions with improvements and enhancements.

Lastly, for the future researchers who would like to resolve the similar issue
or a different one with a different product for the people that are constantly facing
problems in stores amidst the pandemic and the protocols.
