COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This is a 3-unit course which deals with the


general concepts and principles pertaining to
complex pattern of interaction between the
physical environment and biological
communities on earth. Emphasis is also given
on the current environment issues and concerns
as well as disaster risk management techniques.

Message to the students.

You may be like many students who Science,


Technology and Society an empowering field. I hope
that you will find this subject interesting. It provides
the knowledge needed to use your efforts more
effectively. Science, Technology and Society applies to
our everyday lives and the places where we live, and
we can apply ideas learned in this discipline to any
place or occupation in which we find ourselves. And
Science, Technology and Society can connect to any
set of interests or skills you might bring to it:
Progress in the field involves biology, chemistry,
technology, and society. May all your learning become
helpful to you as you embark your best in your future

but some sort of religion. They project some assumptions to fill on top of
assumptions to fill in the gaps. They date the dirt the animal fell in as if that is the
date of the animal. The dirt is most likely million of years old since the radioactive
isotope was set and started to decay.

nanotechnology offer?
- Water, and residue repellent,
antireflective, self-cleaning, resistant to
ultraviolet or infrared light, antifog,
antimicrobial, scratch resistant, or
electrically conductive.

2. Why do you think few scientists works


on nanotechnology?
- Mostly because nanotechnology
development requires a lot of expensive
lab experiment and currently doesn’t
have enough economically feasible
applications to pay for a lot of openings
in the field.

3. Do you think nanotechnology be applicable to solve


environmental problems?
-Yes because we can contribute to human
health and environmental sustainability. As a result,
nanotechnology offers a novel way to reducing waste
production, greenhouse gas emissions, and hazardous
chemical discharge into water bodies.

4. In the world of medicine,


nanotechnology can play
a big role in the repair of
cells, cure diseases and
even delay aging, if this
happens, what would this
mean to our society?
-It means a longer lived
population a healthier
population, longer
families(generationally
not necessarily by
number of children). It
will also help in the other
ways, cleaner energy,
better environments. We
could stick folks on a
spaceship and have them
reach another star in their
lifetime.

From those innovations presented in


class, think of a product or output that
is made up of nanomaterial that has
an impact in various aspects (health,
environment, economy etc.) that you
want to create. Compile at least 7

Sunscreen- For years, nanoparticles
have been used to improve the
effectiveness of sunscreens. Titanium
dioxide and zinc oxide are two forms
of nanoparticles that are often used in
sunscreen.

Clothing- Silica nanoparticles can aid in


the creation of fabrics that repel water
and other liquids. Silica can be
integrated into the weave of a fabric or
sprayed onto the fabric's surface to
provide a waterproof or stainproof
coating.

Adhesives- Adhesives can also benefit


from nanotechnology. Surprisingly,
conventional glues lose their stickiness
at high temperatures, yet a strong
"nano-glue" not only withstands but
strengthens as the surrounding
temperature rises.
Furniture- Upholstered furniture can be
made waterproof and stainproof using
nanotechnology in the same manner
as clothing can. Even better,
nanotechnology is assisting in the
development of furniture that is less
combustible.

Tennis balls- Nanotechnology offers a


variety of uses in sporting equipment,
with two excellent examples coming
from one of my favorite sports: tennis.

Coatings for car paintwork- We all


know how damaging bird droppings
are to car paint. To tackle this, Nano
repel has developed a high-
performance nanocoating that can be
applied to your car's paintwork to
protect it from bird feces.

Computers- Many of the devices we


use every day would not exist without
nanotechnology. Intel is
unquestionably the market leader in
small computer processors, with their
current Core processor technology
being a 10-nanometer device.
