Topic: Manometer Problems

1. The right limb of a simple U-tube manometer containing mercury is open to the atmosphere while
the left limb is connected to a pipe in which the fluid of specific gravity 0.8 is flowing. The Centre of
the pipe is 14 cm below the level of mercury in the right limb. Fund the pressure of liquid in the pipe,
if the difference of mercury level in the two limbs is 18 cm.

2. U-tube manometer containing mercury was used to find the negative pressure in the pipe, containing
water. The right limb was open to the atmosphere. Find the vacuum pressure in the pipe, if the
difference of mercury level in the two limbs was 100 mm and height of water in the left limb from
the centre of the pipe was found to be 40 mm below.

3. A U-tube manometer has been employed to measure the pressure of water in a pipe line which is in
excess of atmospheric pressure. The right limb of the manometer contains mercury and is open to
atmosphere. The contact between the water and mercury is in the left limb. Determine the pressure
of water in the pipe if the difference in the level of mercury in the limbs of the U-tube is 10 cm and
the free surface of mercury is in level with the centre of pipe.

4. A differential manometer is connected to two pipes whose centres are at 2.5 m difference in height.
Higher level pipe is carrying carbon tetrachloride of specific gravity 1.594 under a pressure of 1.05
bar and another pipe is carrying oil of specific gravity 0.8 under a pressure of 1.71 bar. The center
of pipe carrying low pressure liquid is 4 m above the higher level of mercury in the manometer. The
manometer fluid is mercury. Find out the difference in mercury level in the manometer. Given data:
Level difference

5. Determine the difference of pressure between pipes A and B when connected to an inverted U-tube
differential manometer containing oil of specific gravity 0.8 as the manometric liquid. The pipe A
conveys water and a fluid of specific gravity 0.90 flows through the pipe B. The position of
manometric liquid in the left limb is 80 cm above the centre line of pipe A .The position of
manometric liquid in the right limb is 50 cm above the centre line of pipe B. The difference in level
of oil in two limbs is 15 cm. If the pressure of fluid in the pipe B is 5 × 104 N/m2 and the barometer
reading is 730 mm of mercury, find the pressure in pipe A in metres of water absolute.
