POST-COVID VS PRE COVID: INDIAN EDUCATION SYSTEM

INTRODUCTION

Today education has become a basic necessity for all, although not as necessary as food
and shelter. Education has transformed drastically
during these COVID times, from lecture halls to online classes, from books to E-books so
many things have changed. But we’ll talk about the changes the Indian Education System
has gone through.
So it would not be wrong to say that “ Ed vs Tech- Ed: The Indian Version”

CHALLENGES IN ONLINE EDUCATION

When we talk about challenges faced while a transition from of ine to online education there could
be plenty of them, let’s see the most common challenges.

Let us rst see an interesting survey conducted by the

NISA and TRSMA on the students for their opinion OFFLINE ONLINE
on online and of ine education.

A whopping 98.2 percent of the students have chosen 2 %

of ine education over online. What could be the
reason, are they missing their friends? Or are there
seriously some problems with the INDIAN ONLINE
EDUCATION SYSTEM.

Let us see

98 %

• FOR STUDENTS

Students find it difficult to transition to a new learning environment from the traditional
ones. Bringing a change in mindset has been a difficult task for the students.

Technical issues are a common issue for students also, many students are not well
equipped with internet facilities due to which they face issues like buffering during classes,
blurred videos ,etc.

Students start feeling demotivated once they start facing problems in online learning.
They require motivation to bring them back to the learning track again.

COVID has restricted education from playgrounds, friends, teachers to a single room,
students have to manage everything in a single room so they can be easily distracted by
small things too.

In offline classrooms, students had to communicate with various people and ask doubts
to teachers which helped them improve their communication skills which are not possible
to that extent.

Not only students but teachers to face many problems.

• FOR TEACHERS

Teachers had gained expertise in their subjects but they could not help themselves with
these technical issues which come in the middle of the sessions.

It has become a very difficult task for teachers to engage students in the activities held
during online classes.

Post Covid teachers used to give tasks to students which they had to complete within a
given time limit which is not possible in online mode.

Teachers used to give feedback to the students for the work they had submitted at the
moment itself, but now every student has its own time of submission and it is not possible
for a teacher to give feedback that could help the student.

Assessing a student's true performance is a challenge for teachers as there are very
good chances that students might have plagiarised their work.

The course content earlier was designed for traditional classrooms. But the shift to
online classes requires a redesigning of the course structures because no content-related
activities can be held online.

With blackboards and chalks as their tools, it was easier for teachers, but now it has
become difficult for them to adopt new teaching methods that are completely technology-
driven.

These were the problems faced by those who have access to online education, but
there are many instances when we hear that students are not able to attend online classes
due to a lack of facilities.

We discussed the various issues faced because of the Online Education system in India,
but there are always two sides of a coin as here we also have some positives of online
education.

POSITIVES OF ONLINE EDUCATION

Self-paced learning is a big advantage of online education, now students can learn at
their own pace take as much time to learn concepts.

Earlier when education was offline students were not given the right to choose from
which teacher they want to learn, but in the online mode they can choose on their own
according to their choice from which teacher they want to learn.

Most of the students in our country come from middle-class families and online
education being highly affordable is a boon for students.

Teachers also benefit greatly from online education as now they do not have to miss
their class due to some other piece of work they could simply reschedule it accordingly.

Now we shall proceed and have an insight into the future of education in India.

FUTURE OF EDUCATION IN INDIA

Although above we saw that in a survey a high majority of students preferred Offline
education but there have been several studies conducted which show that future of
Education in India is Tech-Ed.

The government is also working towards improving the scope of education in the country.
The most recent steps taken by the government in this direction is introducing the new
education policy National Education Policy(NEP) 2020. This new education policy is a
clarion call towards strengthening the education.

Now improving the facilities for online education are amongst the prioritised things work
upon for the government as in 2025 India will have the largest student population in the
world.

Finally let us take a closer look on a survey conducted :

1. Before COVID-19 how frequent did the teachers use their smartphones for interaction
with students, parents or any other school related work?

This survey has showed that it was a

challenging task for teachers transitioning
from traditional methods to online methods
of teaching.

2. How motivated will be the teachers to learn and begin using online tools to run classes
and assessment?

Now this survey clear indicated that teachers

are enthusiastic enough to learn new
technologies so that they can improve online
learning experience of their students.

Overall it can be concluded that there have been several challenges for the Indian
Education System but everyone associated with it have put in great efforts to make it work.
We might have some issues right now but they would be surely resolved in the near future
and we hope that excellent developments occur in Post-COVID Indian Education System.
