Sheet 2: Plain scale and diagonal scale
1. Construct a plain scale with RF = 1/5 to show decimeters (dm) and centimeteres. The
scale should be long enough to measure 1 m. Show the length of 7.4 dm on it.
2. Construct a plain scale of RF = 1:50 to show meters and decimeters and long enough up
to 8 meters. Indicate 6.7 m distance on scale.
3. Construct a scale of RF = 1/60 to read yard and feet, and long enough to measure up to 5
yards.
4. Construct a Scale of 1.5 inches = 1 foot to show inches and long enough to measure up to
4 feet.
5. Construct a plain scale to show meters when 1 centimeter represents 4 meters and long
enough to measure up to 50 meters. Find the R.F. and mark on it a distance of 36 meters.
6. Draw a diagonal scale of R.F. 1: 2.5, showing centimeteres and millimeteres and long
enough to measure up to 20 centimeteres.
7. Construct a diagonal scale of RF = 1/36 showing Yard, Foot and Inch and to measure up
to 4 Yards. Show 2 Yard 2 feet 5 inches.
8. Construct a diagonal scale of representative fraction = (1/36) showing yard, foot and
inch. Scale should be long enough to measure 5 yards. Measure 3 yards, 2 feet, and 9
inches.
9. The distance between Delhi and Agra is 200 kms. In a railway map it is represented by a
line 5 cm long. Find it’s R.F. Draw a diagonal scale to show single km. And maximum
600 km. Indicate following distances on the scale: 1) 236 km 2) 322 km 3) 489 km 4) 511
km
10. Distance Between Ahmedabad and Gir is 400 kms but in the map of Gujarat it is 10 cm
long line. Find it’s R.F. Make a diagonal scale and indicate 333 km on it.
11. On a map of a state, 1 cm represents 5 kms. Construct a plain scale long enough to
measure a distance between two cities 84 kms far from each other.
12. 3.2 cm long line represents a length of 4 metres. Extend this line to measure length up to
25 metres and show on it units of metre and 5 metres. Show length of 17 metres on the
line.
13. The distance between two places is 240 kms and its equivalent distance on map is 12
cms. Draw plain scale & indicate 270 kms and 120 kms.
14. The length of the khandala tunnel on the Mumbai Pune express way is 330 meters on the
road map. It is shown by 16.5 cms long line. Construct a plain scale to show meters and
to measure up to 400 meters. Show the length of 290-meter-long on the express way.
15. The length of the express highway between Ahmedabad and Baroda is 55 kms on the
road map. It is shown by 11 cm long line. Construct a plain scale to show kilometres and
to measure up to 110 kms. Show the distance between Ahmedabad and Anand which is
64 kms the express way.
16. An area of 144 sqcm on a map represents an area of 9 sqkm on the field. Find the R.F.of
the scale for this map and draw a diagonal scale to show kilometers, hectometers and
decameters and to measure upto 5 kilometers. Indicate on the scale a distance of 3
kilometers, 5 hectometers and 6 decameters or 3.56 km.
17. An area of 144 sq.cm on a map represents an area of 36 sq.km on field. Find RF of scale
for this map and draw diagonal scale to show km, hm, Dm and to measure up to 10
kilometres. Indicate on the scale a distance of 7 kilometres 2 hectometres 4 decametres.

18. A rectangular plot of land measuring 1.28 hectors is represented on a map by a similar
rectangle of 8 sq. cm. Calculate RF of the scale. Draw a diagonal scale to read single
meter. Show a distance of 438 m on it. (1 hector = 10, 000 sq. meters)
19. A room of 1000 m3 is represented on the drawing by a block of 125 cm3. Find the RF and
construct the plain scale to measure up to 15 metres. Mark on it the distance of 10 metres.
20. On map of Gujarat, 1 cm represents 5 kilometres. Construct a plain scale long enough to
measure a distance between Ahmedabad and Baroda. Indicate on it a distance between

Sheet 3A: Engineering Curves (Conic Curve)
1. Ellipse are 125 mm and 75 mm respectively. Draw the ellipse by arc of circle method.
Also draw tangent and normal at any point except point on major and minor axis.
2. The Major and Minor Axis of Ellipse are 125mm and 75mm respectively. Draw the
ellipse by concentric circle method.
3. Focal point of the ellipse are 100 mm apart and minor axis is 75 mm. draw the ellipse and
find the length of major axis. Also draw tangent and normal at any point except point on
major and minor axis.
4. The major axis of the ellipse is 100 mm long and the distance between two foci is 60 mm.
draw the ellipse and find the length of minor axis. Also draw tangent and normal at any
point except point on major and minor axis.
5. The foci of an ellipse are 110 mm apart. The minor axis is 65 mm long. Determine the
length of major axis and draw the half ellipse by rectangle method and other half by
concentric circle method
6. Two fixed point F1 and F2 are 90 mm apart. Construct the locus of the point P moving in
the same plane of F1 and F2 in such way that the sum of its distance from fixed point F1
and F2 is always same and equal to 120 mm. give the name of curve and also draw
normal and tangent to the curve.
7. PQR is a triangle with PQ = 100 mm, PR = 75 mm and QR = 50 mm. draw the ellipse
passing from this triangle.
8. Construct an ellipse in parallelogram 125 mm * 90 mm sides. Take included angle of
parallelogram as 120o and 60o. Also draw tangent and normal at any point except point
on major and minor axis.
9. A plot of ground in the shape of parallelogram 15000 mm * 10000 mm, the angle
between sides is 60o. Inscribe an elliptical flower bed in it. Select the suitable scale.
10. Three points A, B and P While lying on a horizontal line in order, have AB = 60 mm and
AP = 80 mm. while A and B are fixed and P starts moving in such manner that AP+BP
will remain constant and when they forms an isosceles triangle AP = BP = 50 mm. draw
the path trace by the point P from the commence of its motion back to its initial position.
11. The distance between a fixed point and a straight line 60 mm. draw the locus of the
moving point P such that its distance from fixed point is equal from the straight line. Also
draw the normal and tangent to any point except vortex.
12. Draw the parabola in rectangle 100 mm high and 80 mm wide. Also draw the normal and
tangent to any point except vortex.
13. Draw the parabola in parallelogram of 125 mm * 100 mm sides and it inclined to 30 o to
the horizontal.
14. Draw the parabola by tangent method. Height of parabola 80 mm and width of parabola
140 mm.
15. Draw the parabola in rectangle of 150 mm high and 120 mm wide. Also draw the normal
and tangent to any point except vortex.
16. A ball is thrown from the ground reaches a maximum height of 10 meter and travel a
distance of 22 meter from the point of projection. Trace the path follow by the ball and
name the curve.
17. An autohead light reflector, for parallel rays of light, is parabolic in shape and with its
bulb at focus point. The distance of the focus from where the parabola cuts the axis is 100

mm. draw the shape of reflector. The reflector have an aperture of 300 mm. (take Suitable
scale).
18. A boy standing on terrace of a building of 20 m high, throws a boll while has its highest
flight and just crosses a tree of 30 m height. Trace the path of the ball if the distance
between the building and the tree is 8 m. (take Suitable Scale)
19. A cricket ball is thrown and reaches a maximum height of 10 m and falls on the ground at
a distance of 30 m from the point of projection. Determine the angle of projection and
draw the path trace by the ball assuming the point of projection is at ground level. Also
name the curve and draw its normal and tangent.
20. A javelin thrower throws the spear with the velocity of 28 m/s at an angle to cover the
maximum distance. Draw the path trace by spear (considering spear as point) and name
the curve. Also draw tangent and normal to any point of curve.

23. Draw a conic curve when the distance of the focus from the vertex is 45 mm and the
eccentricity e = 3/2. Name the curve. Also draw the tangent and normal to any point on

25. For a perfect gas the relation between Pressure and volume during isothermal expansion
is given by PV= C. draw the curve of isothermal expansion of an enclosed volume of gas
if 0.056634 cubic meter of gas corresponds to a pressure of 0.3515 N. per sq. cm.
26. Two fixed points F1 and F2 are 60 mm apart. Trace two curves, describe out by point P 1
and P 2 moving in the same Plane of F1 and F2 such that the difference between distances
from F1 and F2 is always constant and equal to 30 mm.

Sheet 3B: Engineering Curves (Cycloid, Involute and Spiral)
1. Diameter of rolling circle, rolls on straight line, is 70 mm. construct a cycloid for point P
initially at the point of contact between generating circle and directing line. Draw tangent
and normal at any point on curve.
2. A circular disc of diameter 50 mm rolls on a straight path, having the length equal to
circumference of disc. There is a hole in plate 5 mm from its outer diameter. Draw the
path trace by the hole (assuming hole as point), if the hole it at its bottom most position
initially. Name the curve and also draw the normal and tangent to it.
3. Given the diameter of generating circle is 60 mm. given the point P, 10 mm outside the
circumference on rolling circle. This circle is rolling without slipping/sliding on a fixed
straight line. Draw the path trace by point P and name the Curve. Also draw the normal
and tangent to any point on the curve.
4. A circle of 30 mm radius, is rolling on the straight line without slip. A point is inside the
circle, 20 mm from the centre initially at top most position. Draw the locus of the point P
for one complete revolution.
5. A circle, of 20 mm radius, is rolling on another circle of 45 mm radius. Initially a point P
is at the contact of two point. Draw the path trace by the point P for the one complete
revolution of circle and name the curve. Also draw the normal and tangent to any point
on curve.
6. A circle, of 20 mm radius, is rolling on another circle of 60 mm radius. Initially a point P
is at the contact of two point. Draw the path trace by the point P for the one complete
revolution of circle and name the curve. Also draw the normal and tangent to any point
on curve.
7. A circle, of 25 mm radius, is rolling on another circle of 55 mm radius. A point P, 30 mm
from centre of circle, is nearest to the directing circle. Draw the path trace by the point P
for the one complete revolution of circle and name the curve. Also draw the normal and
tangent to any point on curve.
8. A circle, of 18 mm radius, is rolling inside another circle of 50 mm radius. A point P, 22
mm from centre of rolling circle, is far away to the directing circle. Draw the path trace
by the point P for the one complete revolution of circle and name the curve. Also draw
the normal and tangent to any point on curve.
9. Show graphically that the hypocycloid is straight line, when the diameter of rolling circle
is half of the diameter of directing circle.
10. A circle, of radius 25 mm, rolls without slip on a horizontal surface by (1/2) revolution
and then it rolls up a vertical surface (wall) by another (1/2) revolution. Initially the point
P is at bottom of the circle touching the floor. Draw the path of the point P.
11. A circle, of 60 mm diameter, rolls on the outside of a directing circle of same diameter
without slipping. Draw the curve traced by a point on the rolling circle for one revolution
of rolling circle.
12. Construct one complete turn of an Involute of a circle of 100 mm Diameter. Draw normal
and tangent to any point on curve.
13. Construct one complete turn of an involute of a hexagon of 30 mm side. Draw normal
and tangent to any point on curve.
14. Draw the involute of a regular pentagon of size 30 mm.

15. One end of an inelastic thread, 160 mm long, attached to the circumference of a circular
disc of 40 mm diameter. Draw the path of the free end of the thread, if it is completely
wound round the disc, keeping the thread always tight. Name the curve and draw normal
and tangent to any point on curve.
16. An in-elastic string, of 120 mm length is wound round a cylinder of 60 mm diameter,
keeping the string always tight. Draw the curve generated by end point of string. Also
draw normal and tangent to any point on curve.
17. Draw an involute of the circular arc which subtends an angle of 90o at the centre of the
circle of diameter 120 mm.
18. An inelastic string is wounded to a length of 120 mm from a drum of diameter 30 mm.
draw the locus of the free end of the string which is held tight during the unwinding.
19. A stick of length equal to length of circumference of a semicircle, initially tangent to the
semicircle on the right side of it. This stick now rolls over the circumference of a
semicircle without sliding till it becomes tangent on the left side of the semicircle. Draw
the path trace by two end points of this trick. Name the curve. Take radius of semicircle
as 50 mm.
20. Construct an Archimedean spiral of one convolution, given the maximum and minimum
radius are 55 mm and 31 mm respectively. Draw tangent and normal to the curve at any
point.
21. Construct an Archimedean spiral of one and half convolution, given the maximum and
minimum radius are 81 mm and 27 mm respectively. Draw tangent and normal to the
curve at any point.
22. Construct an Archimedean spiral of one and half convolution, given the maximum and
minimum radius are 125 mm and 35 mm respectively. Draw tangent and normal to the
curve at a point 85 mm from the pole.
23. Construct an Archimedean spiral of one and half convolution, given the maximum and
minimum radius are 84 mm and 00 mm respectively. Draw tangent and normal to the
curve at a point 60 mm from the pole.
24. A point moves radially outward from the centre of the circular disc to the periphery when
disc completes two revolutions. The radial movement of a point P and circular motion of
disc is assumed uniform. Take diameter of disc as 150 mm and draw the locus of point P.
name the curve. Also draw tangent and normal to any point on the curve.
25. Construct a logarithmic spiral of one convolution. Given the length of the shortest radius
vector equal to 12 mm and the ration of the lengths of the successive radius vectors equal
to 6/5 for the vector angle of 30o. Also draw tangent and normal to the curve at any point.
26. Construct a logarithmic spiral of one convolution. Given the length of the shortest radius
vector equal to 18 mm and the ration of the lengths of the successive radius vectors equal
to 9/8 for the vector angle of 30o. Also draw tangent and normal to the curve at any point.
