1. Gravity - Newton is said to have found Gravity while considering the powers of nature
after saw a falling apple. Whatever happened, Newton discovered that dropping
objects like apples must be subjected to some energy, or they would not begin to
move from their resting position.

Contributions:
 Gravity at our level of reality provides the ongoing support to enable the constant
existing of the mass-density of our matter particles.
 Gravitation effect, which is often confused with Gravity, is responsible for the

m
er as
attraction between matter particles.
 Gravity and Gravitational Thermodynamic effect are responsible for all

co
eH w
phenomena extant in the Universe.

o.
rs e
2. Telescope - The telescope is a simple device intended to enhance vision, making
ou urc
distant things appear closer. It is this that makes it so useful and versatile for use on land
and at sea. Not only have many different types of telescope been made in the last four
centuries, but telescopic enhancements have also been used on many other instruments
o

and accessories.
aC s
vi y re

Contributions:
 Telescopes have also helped us understand gravity and other fundamental laws
of the physical world.
ed d

 Some new telescopes allow us to study objects in the universe by detecting the
ar stu

heat or radio waves or X-rays they emit.

 Telescopes are now discovering planets around other stars.
is

3. Processed Food - In the 1950s, the first ready-made meal was put out into the market
in the US. It was Swanson's frozen turkey dinner and it came about because C.A.
Th

Swanson & Sons had overestimated how many turkeys Americans were going to eat for
Thanksgiving in 1953. It was an innovation spawned out of surplus rather than
shortages.
sh

Contributions:
 The major portion of our family’s food needs comes from processed
food products that add variety to our diets and convenience to our busy lives.
 Processed foods enable consumers to shop less frequently and to stock a wide
range of foods on which to base varied and nutritious meals.

4. Microscope - In the late 16th century several Dutch lens makers designed devices that
magnified objects, but in 1609 Galileo Galilei perfected the first device known as
a microscope. Dutch spectacle makers Zaccharias Janssen and Hans Lipperhey are
noted as the first men to develop the concept of the compound microscope.

Contributions:
 Microscope allows scientists to view detailed relationships between the
structures and functions at different levels of resolution.
 Microscopes have continued to be improved since they were first invented and
used by early scientists like Anthony Leeuwenhoek to observe bacteria, yeast
and blood cells.

5. Radio - Radio waves were first identified and studied by German physicist Heinrich
Hertz in 1886. The first practical radio transmitters and receivers were developed around

m
1895–1896 by Italian Guglielmo Marconi, and radio began to be used commercially

er as
around 1900.

co
eH w
Contributions:

o.
 Radio has the ability to reach across borders and can become a valuable source
rs e
of information where reliable news is scarce.
ou urc
 Radio has proved its worth in times of emergency such as when access to the
mobile network is down as a result of an overload, or phone lines are cut.

6. Benzene Ring - was first discovered by the English scientist Michael Faraday in 1825 in
vi y re

illuminating gas. In 1834 German chemist Eilhardt Mitscherlich heated benzoic acid with
lime and produced benzene. In 1845 German chemist A.W. The structure of Benzene
has been of interest since its discovery.
ed d

Contributions:
ar stu

 In 1858 he showed that carbon can link with itself to form long chains.
 In 1865 he reported his discovery of the benzene ring as the basis for another
major group of carbon molecules.
is

 Since then, various versions of the dream have found their way into scholarly
Th

analyses.
7. Large Hadron Collider - The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) story began in 1976 when
the European particle physics community began to discuss building a Large Electron
sh

Positron (LEP) collider at CERN. LEP was, of course, eventually built and installed in a
27 km tunnel, which today houses the LHC.

Contributions:
 The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is by far the most powerful particle accelerator
built to date.

https://www.coursehero.com/file/84511456/Scientific-Development-Riguer-1docx/
 The LHC allows scientists to reproduce the conditions that existed within a
billionth of a second after the Big Bang by colliding beams of high-energy protons
or ions at colossal speeds, close to the speed of light.

8. Guns - The first primitive guns were probably bamboo tubes, fragile and
ineffective firearms used in futile attempts to stop the Mongol invaders. Europeans
obtained gunpowder in the thirteenth century. A formula for making it was discovered in
writings dating from the year 1249 and attributed to Roger Bacon (1220-1292).

Contributions:
 The first guns were simple tubes from which to shoot explosive charges, but
gradually they were made easier to load, aim, and fire.
 Guns revolutionized warfare and effectively ended the age of the armored knight
and the castle stronghold. They have had a profound effect on human history.

m
er as
9. Internet - The Internet started in the 1960s as a way for government researchers to

co
eH w
share information. This eventually led to the formation of the ARPANET (Advanced
Research Projects Agency Network), the network that ultimately evolved into what we

o.
now know as the Internet.
rs e
ou urc
Contributions:
 More specifically, they state that the Internet use can improve learners' academic
o

performance, promote research skills and critical thinking, encourage

aC s

independent or collaborative learning, enhance motivation, strengthen self-

vi y re

confidence and improve the teaching methods.

10. Cell phones - The precursors to mobile phones can be seen in the early 1900s.
Originally, the purpose of cell phones was for people to drive and talk at the same time.
ed d

In 1983, Motorola launched the first cell phone to the world: the DynaTAC 800x.
ar stu

Contributions:
 Cellular technology has had other wide-ranging effects on society.
is

 It has played a key role in the information age, allowing people to telecommute
Th

and live and work where they want. Over 90% of current users say it makes them
more efficient workers.
 Cell phones also provide a sense of safety for users.
