CHAPTER I: INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study

Love is like playing piano. The pianist learns to play by the rules, then forget the rules

and play by the heart. The Philippines is a country of tradition and culture. One of the traditions

that foreigners find unique about our country is courtship. Courtship is a way of expressing

thoughts and feelings to the person you love. It is a feeling when a certain person wants to win

the heart of an ideal girl or boy he/she wanted the most. Courtship is an act of doing anything for

the person you love by exerting efforts. Suitors need to have courage and sacrifice to talk with

the parents, pleading to permit his intention and to be in a relationship with the ideal one.

Courtship is something we must need to know because nowadays many teenagers don’t value

courtship. But in certain denominations courtship are done by different means.

The Roman Catholic practices serenade in courting a girl. They harmoniously sing in

front of a girl and confess feelings. The boy exert efforts to win the heart of a girl. It is also the

tradition of Roman Catholics to go first to the family of a girl, confess and plead for the

approval. The boy also gives gifts to the parents and follows the order or agreement given by the

parents. The parents will decide whether the boy passed the process of courting.

The Iglesia ni Kristo practices the same courting manner. The boy only courts a girl if

they have the same denomination. If a boy courts a girl from other denominations, the boy will

be kick out from their denomination.

The Jehova’s Witness also practices the same courting manner. But the difference is

when a boy courts a girl from other denomination, the leader will call his attention and command

him to stop from courting that girl.

The Baptist practice simple way of courting a girl. They didn’t matter about the other

denomination.

Lastly, the Seventh Day Adventist practices personal courtship in which the boy confess

his feelings unto a girl. They don’t make much use of technology but in interacting to form a

strong relationship.
