Activity #2 – Synthesis
Choose one Bikolano artwork (song, poem, painting, photography, etc.) then answer the following
questions:

1. Give at least 2 assumptions of art that are manifested in the artwork. Justify your answer within 2-
3 sentences each assumption.
The three assumptions that are manifested in the artwork "Hindi Magkhiwalay" is that art is:
universal, cultural, and an expression. The first assumption of art that is relevant to the artwork is
art being universal. Everybody has a story to share with the subject and theme of the artwork, a
mother leaving her children behind to work and earn. The emotion and message the artwork
conveys is can be understood by anyone like a universal language and the audience find it
relatable since anyone has a family and when one of them leaves, pain and longingness will be
felt.
The second assumption manifested in the artwork is that art is cultural . Filipinos are known for
being family-oriented people, they value and love their family even their distant relatives so
when one family member plans to leave, the usual scenario looks like what the painting displays.
 The culture of Filipinos being a family-oriented individual was shown and promoted by the
artwork as it illustrates how strong is the family ties and bond of Filipinos.
The last assumption of art that the artwork reflects is it expresses emotions. The artist expressed
the emotion of love by how tight the mother embraces her children, the emotion of fear of being
away from each other showed by how their eyes are tightly shut, and the feeling of uncertainty.
The artist released his emotions through his artwork and he succeeds for I can feel the love and
fear the subjects are feeling.

2. What is the art form of the artwork? Explain in 2-3 sentences.

The art form of "Hindi Magkhiwalay" is classified as painting under the visual arts category. The
artwork is considered a painting since it was created on a flat surface, canvas, and it is a two-
dimensional art piece. Acrylic was the material used for the artwork to be made.

There is three relevance that is manifested in the artwork "Hindi Magkhiwalay" which are:
personal, cultural, and social relevance. The artwork has personal relevance for it made me
realize things: appreciate people and things to avoid regrets in the future, show how much you
value your love ones, and sacrifices are made for a better tomorrow. As a daughter, I
appreciated more my parents because they are here with me amidst my constant stubbornness,
I valued them more for they stayed even if my aunties and uncles in Manila are offering them to
work there. Also, for a tree to grow, sacrifices like sowing, watering, grooming, and such actions
are needed to be done first to harvest the fruits it will give to you.
Second, it has a cultural relevance as it showed how family-oriented Filipinos are. The family
bond is tight and valued so once a family member leaves, hugs, kisses, and wishes are exchanged
as if they will not see each other again. The artwork displays the common and dramatic scenario
every time one family member leaves.
Lastly, the artwork has social relevance for it presents some social issues which are: poverty,
that the majority of opportunities are only found in urban places, changing roles of women, and
slow development in rural areas. The solution presented for the issue of poverty is the mother
leaving to work in urban place as the progress in rural areas is stagnant. It is also an eye-opener
for the people that the roles of women are slowly changing, they are not stuck on changing
diapers but can also change now the world.
