Definitions: Unit 1

1. Acquaintance - a person that you have met but do not know well


2. Be on the same wavelength – understand each other very well
3. Boss- a person who is in charge of other people at work and tells them what to
do
4. Classmate – a person who is or was in the same class as you at school or
college
5. Colleague – someone you work with
6. Enjoy his/her company – like to be with him/her
7. Fall out - to argue with someone and stop being friendly with them
8. Get to know him/her– know him/ her better
9. Have a lot in common – like/ enjoy the same things
10.Argument – a conversation or discussion in which two or more people
disagree, often angrily
11.Have the same sense of humour – find the same things funny
12.Keep in touch – stay in contact
13.Lose touch – not stay in contact
14.Lose your temper – to fail to control your anger
15.See red – to become very angry
16.Stranger – someone you do not know
17.Team-mate – a member of the same team
18.Belong to – to be owned by somebody/something
19.Fluent in – able to speak, read or write a language, especially a foreign
language, easily and well
20.Good at – to be skilful and successful at doing something
21.Keen on – very interested in something or eager to do something
22.Worry about – To feel uneasy, anxious about someone or something.
23.Dependable – If someone or something is dependable, you can
have confidence in him, her, or it; reliable
24.Encouraging – to give somebody support, courage, hope or confidence
25.Generous – willing to give money, help, kindness, etc., especially more than
is usual or expected
26.Kind- hearted – a person who cares about you and wants to help you
27.Jealous – feeling angry or unhappy because somebody you like or love is
showing interest in somebody else
28.Mean – not willing to give or share things
29.Pleasant – a person who is friendly and well-behaved
30.Selfish – caring only about yourself rather than about other people
31.Sulky – in a bad mood or not speaking because you are unhappy or angry about
something
32.Upbeat – full of hope, happiness, and good feelings
33.Bring up – care for children until they are adults
34.Carry on – continue (doing something)
35.Grow up – develop from being a child to being an adult
36.Get on with – to have a good relationship with someone
37.Look after – take care of someone
38.Look up to – admire and respect someone
39.Take after – look or behave like another member of your family
40. Tell off – talk angrily to someone because they have done something wrong
