Module No.: 10
I. Topic: MAGNETIC FIELD
II. Learning Targets:
At the end of the lesson, I can:
1. evaluate the total magnetic flux through an open surface;
2. identify the direction of current using the right hand rule;
3. imbibe the value of perseverance in achieving life goals and
4. develop the value of appreciation in encountering uncertainties and accidents in life.
III. Introduction/Content/Review

Magnetism is considered the first cousin of electricity for they are very much related.
Electromagnetism is the part of physics that deals with the relations between electricity and
magnetism. It is the term used to refer to the ability of lodestones to attract iron. A material having this
property is called magnet. Lodestones literally means “way finding stone.” When suspended freely,
one end of a lodestone always points North and the other end points South.

of The Arabian Nights. The ships that were lost in the
sea and disappeared were believed to have been pulled
to this mountain, similar to the Bermuda Triangle in our
modern time.

This is just a legend but this

will introduce us very well to
the concept of magnetic field.
Surrounding a magnet is a
magnetic field. A magnetic
field is a region of space where a magnet is capable of exerting a force on
a magnetic material. This is analogous to the electric field around an electric
charge. If a monopole were available, magnetic field intensity or simply the
magnetic field could have been defined in a similar way as an electric field.
However, because a monopole does not exist, magnetic field is defined in Sinbad the Sailor
terms of the force exerted on an electric charge moving in the field. In
symbols,

Where:
F= force in Newton
q= charge in Coulomb
v= velocity of the charge in meter/second
B= magnetic field in newton/ (coulomb meter/second) or newton/ampere meter
Ө= angle between v and B

In 1830’s Michael Faraday introduced the idea of magnetic field as

made of lines of force. Magnetic field lines point from the North pole
to the South pole.

To demonstrate magnetic lines of force, place a piece of paper on

top of different arrangements of magnets. Sprinkle iron filings on the
paper.

The number of lines of force is called the magnetic flux. Its unit is
the weber, abbreviated as Wb. Flux per unit area perpendicular to
the field is called the magnetic field intensity. The SI unit for
magnetic field intensity is the Tesla, named after Nikola Tesla. A
letter T denotes the unit Tesla. Diagrams of magnetic field for

field Field sometime in 1820. While he was doing his
demonstration on the heating effect of current,
he noticed thatas he turned on the switch, the
needle of the compass
placed nearby deflected.
Upon reversing the current in the wire, the needle moved to the other side. He
accidentally discovered that a current carrying conductor produces a magnetic
field. This magnetic field influenced the orientation of the nearby compass.

A famous scientist named Lagrange was quoted as saying, “Accidents do

happen to someone who deserves it.” For Hans Christian Oersted, the
accidental discovery of the relationship between electricity and magnetism
brought him not only prizes and endowments but admiration and respect of his

THE RIGHT HAND RULE

A current carrying conductor produces a magnetic field around it. The form of the resulting field
depends on the shape of the conductor. The direction of the magnetic field produced by a current may
be determined from the Right hand rule.

Right Hand Rule 1

Grasp the wire with the right hand in such a way that the thumb
points to the direction of the conventional current. The fingers curl
in the direction of the magnetic field.

When a current is passing through a straight wire, the magnetic lines

of force form concentric circles with thier center at the axis of the
wire and their planes perpendicular to the wire.

Right Hand Rule 2

Point your thumb to the direction of the current or velocity.
Point your fingers to the direction of the magnetic field.
Your palm will point to the direction of the force.

GENERAL DEFINITION OF MAGNETIC FLUX

Magnetic Flux is defined as the product of the area of the surface swept out by the moving conductor
and component of the magnetic field B that is perpendicular to this area. In symbols,

Φ = 𝐵𝐴cosϕ

2021.03.21 7:43:51 AM NDDU-IBED-F-081

Where B is the magnetic field strength, A is the area and ϕ is the angle between the magnetic field
and a line perpendicualr to the area. The flux depends on the magnetic field B, area A and the angle
ϕ. A change in any of these three factors constitutes a change in flux.
EXAMPLE 1

A coil wire is situated in a 5.0 T uniform magnetic field. The area of the coil is 2.0 𝑚2 . What is
the magnetic flux if the angle between the magnetic field and the normal to the surface of the
coil is 60°?
Using the equation
Solution
Φ = 𝐵𝐴cosϕ
Given:
Φ = ሺ0.5 𝑇ሻሺ2𝑚2 ሻ𝑐𝑜𝑠60°
B=0.5 T
𝚽 = 𝟎. 𝟓 𝑾𝒃
ϕ = 60°
A= 2.0 𝑚2

EXAMPLE 2

A coil wire is situated in a 5.0 T uniform magnetic field. The area of the coil is 4.0 𝑚2 . What is
the magnetic flux if the angle between the magnetic field and the normal to the surface of the
coil is 60°?
Using the equation
Solution
Φ = 𝐵𝐴cosϕ
Given:
Φ = ሺ0.5 𝑇ሻሺ4𝑚2 ሻ𝑐𝑜𝑠60°
B=0.5 T
𝚽 = 𝟏 𝑾𝒃
ϕ = 60°
A= 4.0 𝑚2

EXAMPLE 3

A coil wire is situated in a 1.0 T uniform magnetic field. The area of the coil is 2.0 𝑚2 . What is
the magnetic flux if the angle between the magnetic field and the normal to the surface of the
coil is 60°?
Solution Using the equation
Given: Φ = 𝐵𝐴cosϕ
B=1.0 T Φ = ሺ1.0 𝑇ሻሺ2𝑚2 ሻ𝑐𝑜𝑠60°

ϕ = 60° 𝚽 = 𝟏 𝑾𝒃

A= 2.0 𝑚2

PRACTICE EXERCISE
With the given examples and measurement of magnetic flux
from numbers 1-3, what can you conclude about the
relationship of magnetic flux to (a)magnetic field (b)area?

IV. Check your Understanding

PRACTICE EXERCISE
Using the given Venn diagram, give the similarities
and differences between magnetic field and electric
field. Refer to the image shown above.

Magnetic Electric
field Field

With the given examples and measurement of magnetic flux from numbers 1-3, what can you
conclude about the relationship of magnetic flux to (a)magnetic field (b)area?

2021.03.21 7:43:51 AM NDDU-IBED-F-081

Answers in Practice Exercise:

Direction

Current (I) (1) right (2) left (3) left

Magnetic Field (B) (1) upward (2) upward (3) right

Magnetic Force (F) (1) out (2) inward (3) out

Magnetic flux is dependent in both magnetic field and area. When the magnetic field
doubles, the magnetic flux doubles as well. When the area doubles (magnetic field is
constant) the magneticflux also doubles. Thus, they are directly proportional.

V. Enrichment

Your enrichment activity will be in a short test that will be posted in Moodle.
