General Physics 2
Magnetism is considered the first cousin of electricity for they are very much related.
Electromagnetism is the part of physics that deals with the relations between electricity and
magnetism. It is the term used to refer to the ability of lodestones to attract iron. A material having this
property is called magnet. Lodestones literally means “way finding stone.” When suspended freely,
one end of a lodestone always points North and the other end points South.

B= magnetic field in newton/ (coulomb meter/second) or newton/ampere meter
Ө= angle between v and B
The number of lines of force is called the magnetic flux. Its unit is
the weber, abbreviated as Wb. Flux per unit area perpendicular to
the field is called the magnetic field intensity. The SI unit for
magnetic field intensity is the Tesla, named after Nikola Tesla. A
letter T denotes the unit Tesla. Diagrams of magnetic field for

A current carrying conductor produces a magnetic field around it. The form of the resulting field
depends on the shape of the conductor. The direction of the magnetic field produced by a current may
be determined from the Right hand rule.
Using the right hand rule, identify the direction of the following:
1.

Current (I)
2.

Magnetic Flux is defined as the product of the area of the surface swept out by the moving conductor
and component of the magnetic field B that is perpendicular to this area. In symbols,
Φ = 𝐵𝐴cosϕ
A coil wire is situated in a 5.0 T uniform magnetic field. The area of the coil is 2.0 𝑚2 . What is
the magnetic flux if the angle between the magnetic field and the normal to the surface of the
coil is 60°?
Using the equation
Solution
Φ = 𝐵𝐴cosϕ
Given:
Φ = ሺ0.5 𝑇ሻሺ2𝑚2 ሻ𝑐𝑜𝑠60°
B=0.5 T
𝚽 = 𝟎. 𝟓 𝑾𝒃
ϕ = 60°
A= 2.0 𝑚2
EXAMPLE 2
A coil wire is situated in a 5.0 T uniform magnetic field. The area of the coil is 4.0 𝑚2 . What is
the magnetic flux if the angle between the magnetic field and the normal to the surface of the
coil is 60°?
Using the equation
Solution
Φ = 𝐵𝐴cosϕ
Given:
Φ = ሺ0.5 𝑇ሻሺ4𝑚2 ሻ𝑐𝑜𝑠60°
B=0.5 T
𝚽 = 𝟏 𝑾𝒃
ϕ = 60°
A= 4.0 𝑚2
EXAMPLE 3
A coil wire is situated in a 1.0 T uniform magnetic field. The area of the coil is 2.0 𝑚2 . What is
the magnetic flux if the angle between the magnetic field and the normal to the surface of the
coil is 60°?
Solution Using the equation
Given: Φ = 𝐵𝐴cosϕ
B=1.0 T Φ = ሺ1.0 𝑇ሻሺ2𝑚2 ሻ𝑐𝑜𝑠60°
ϕ = 60° 𝚽 = 𝟏 𝑾𝒃
A= 2.0 𝑚2

Using the given Venn diagram, give the similarities
and differences between magnetic field and electric
field. Refer to the image shown above.

With the given examples and measurement of magnetic flux from numbers 1-3, what can you
conclude about the relationship of magnetic flux to (a)magnetic field (b)area?
Direction
Magnetic flux is dependent in both magnetic field and area. When the magnetic field
doubles, the magnetic flux doubles as well. When the area doubles (magnetic field is
constant) the magneticflux also doubles. Thus, they are directly proportional.
V. Enrichment
Your enrichment activity will be in a short test that will be posted in Moodle.
