1. Introduction

Junk food simply means an empty calorie food. An empty calorie food is a high calorie or calorie
rich food which lacks in micronutrients such as vitamins, minerals, amino acids and fiber but has a high
energy. Unfortunately, today’s world has been adapted to a system of consumption of foods which has
several adverse effects on health. Junk food may be appealing due to their attractive appearance, taste,
convenient, low cost and easy to consume. This changing lifestyle of new generation not only affects the
nutritional status but also affect their physical performance.

2. Background of the Study

According to Wikipedia, junk food is a term describing food that is perceived to be unhealthy or
having poor nutritional value, according to Food Standards Agency. The term is believed to have been
coined by Michael Jacobson, director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, in 1972. The term
has since become common usage. Junk Food includes those food items that do not add any value to a
person’s diet. Here, value denotes essential nutrients, vitamins & minerals. Street food and fast food are
also taken in the same context as junk. Healthy nutritious foods have been replaced by the new food
mantra - JUNK FOOD! Junk food comprises of anything that is quick, tasty, convenient and fashionable. It
seems to have engulfed every age; every race and the newest entrants are children.

4. Statement of the Problem


a. A study was conducted to evaluate the aftermath effects of the Senior High School
Students of Notre Dame of Bongao and their intakes and determine the level of
knowledge on the nocuous effects of junk food.
b. Determining to what level of knowledge are the opinions and observations on the
effects of these junk foods to their well-being.

5. Scope and Delimitation

This study was confined on determining the level of knowledge and understanding of
the effects of eating junk food. The variables were limited to the Senior High School Students of
Notre Dame of Bongao.

6. Significance of the Study

This study was made to enhance the understanding and awareness on the various consequences
that eating junk food can do. Both on physical and mental health. The findings of this study could
provide insights and recommendations to the limitation of the Student’s intake of these empty calorie
food. Also, this can be used as a baseline study for future researchers who will conduct a study in
resemblance to this one.

12. Statement of the Problem

Specifically, this study searched for answers to the following questions:


c. What is the demographic profile of the respondents?
d. What are the aftermath effects of the amount of junk food taken and determine the
level of knowledge on its harmful effects?
e. What is the level of knowledge of the respondents regarding of the on the effects of
these junk foods to their well-being?
f. What measures and suggestions did the respondents did as they retaliate the
problem.

13. Scope and Delimitation

This study was confined on determining the level of knowledge and understanding of
the effects of eating junk food. The variables were limited to the Senior High School (STEM)
Students of Notre Dame of Bongao.

14. Significance of the Study

This study was made to enhance the understanding and awareness on the various consequences
that eating junk food can do. The findings of this study could provide insights and recommendations to
the limitation of the Student’s intake of these empty calorie food. Also, this can be used as a baseline
study for future researchers who will conduct a study in resemblance to this one.

15. Assumptions

The study was anchored on the basic assumption that the knowledge will help them become
fully aware of the harmful effect of junk food. The research likewise relied on the assumption that
questionnaire results will become a great asset to the study.
16. Hypothesis

The research intended to test the null hypothesis that a junk food can harm the human health.

The following were tested for significance and rejection.

Hypothesis 1: Consuming too much junk food can cause harm to the body.

Hypothesis 2: The difference of the amount eaten junk food a day will also change its effects to
the body.

Hypothesis 3: Consuming Junk food can also bring benefit to the body if consumed properly.
