LEARNING OUTCOMES OF CE3166 PROJECT

 Learn how to idealize a structure for analysis

 Learn how to use structural analysis software for quick design

 Learn how to use design tables for member checks

 Have lotsa fun learning and working with your teammates

PROJECT OVERVIEW

A steel workshop shown in Figure 1 was recently constructed beside an existing power
substation in the Faculty of Engineering. The steel workshop is not structurally connected to
the power substation. Your team is required to perform structural analysis of the steel
workshop (Part 1) and to redesign the steel workshop (Part 2).

Please note the deadline for the submissions:

Part 1 - 11 Oct 2016

Part 2 - 15 Nov 2016

PROJECT BRIEF (PART I) (Due 11 Oct 2016)

In Part 1 of the project, your team is required to perform structural analysis of the steel
workshop. Figures 3 to 6 show the plan view of the workshop at various elevations while
Figures 7 to 9 show the elevation views in four main directions. S275 steel sections are used
and their dimensions/properties are indicated in the figures.

Characteristic loadings to be used:

Dead load:
Self-weight of the steel members can be referred from the section tables. Alternatively, the
structural analysis software can be configured to account for self-weight automatically.
The dead loads of the roof and cladding can be taken to be 0.05 kN/m2.

Imposed load:
The roof is non accessible except for normal maintenance and repairs. According to BS EN
1991-1-1-2002 Table 6.10, the imposed loads on the roof can be taken to be 0.6 kN/m2.

Wind load:
Only lateral wind loads in the four major directions need to be considered. Wind loading should
be applied in only one direction at any one time. It should be noted that wind load on the
South Elevation (refer to Figure 8) should only be applied to the exposed panels above the
existing roof level of the power substation. For simplicity of this project, the wind load can be
taken to be 0.8 kN/m2.

Using ETABS and design tables for structural analysis and member design check:

The basic ETABS model file, shown in Figure 10, will be provided in IVLE. All the member ends
are initialized with pin-ended connections. You are required to do the following:

(1) Tweak the end conditions of the members according to your idealization of the
connections.

(2) Apply the structural loadings to the structure using equivalent line loads or point loads.

(3) Apply load combinations and analyze the structure.

(4) Identify the necessary performance criteria checks to be carried out.

(5) Identify the most critical members (one for each type of member) and extract the member
forces to perform member design check. The electronic version of the SCI Blue Book
(http://tsbluebook.steel-sci.org/EN/Browsers/Main.htm) which has been demonstrated
during tutorial class may be used for design checks in this project.

(3) Brace.

(4) Roof purlin.

(5) Cladding side-rail.

B. Critical member checks for the following types of members under SLS:

Questions to ponder to help in your understanding and appreciation of the steel structure:
(no submission is required for these questions)

1. Try to vary the number of braces used in the roof and analyze the structure. From the
results, what can you conclude about the use of roof brace?

2. Try to vary the number of braces used in the wall and analyze the structure. From the
results, what can you conclude about the use of the wall brace?

3. What is the difference between cross-brace and single diagonal brace? What type of brace
will you choose?

4. How does the spacing of the restraints affect the structural performance?

5. How does column member orientation affect the structural performance?
