WASTE MANAGEMENT AT THE COMMUNITY OF REMERA HEALTH CENTER
DISITRICT: Gasabo

Total population of Nyabisindu village 2000 distributed in 520 households

➢ The waste is not separated well before being put into the bags.
➢ Villages do not have enough pits for collecting waste water or stagnate r, conducted to
the valley
➢ The village did not have appropriete channel for the canalization of rainwater and
used water

➢ The waste is collected in the village by a company BAHEZA
LTDresponsible for collecting waste once a week in which each
household contributes an amount of 3000frw to 7000 frw so that their
waste can be collected
➢ They are using cleaned toilets as much as they can to prevent diseases
➢ Some of the place Waste are spread where there are not supposed to be in the village
➢ The septic tanks for the toilet are constructed so as to empty them
➢ The population lives in promiscuity and makes it difficult to them to manage waste

STRENGTHEN
• Dustbins are available some of the place
• Water points are available in all services
• The maternity room has all dustbins to collect waste according to the type
• Tanks of water are available
• The cleaning and decontamination products are available and labelled
• Availability of toilet and bathroom for clients, toilet paper are available and properly managed
• Waste is not spread everywhere at the health centre
• Sterilizer’s equipment are available
• All staff and Support staff are vaccinated on Covid-19
• All staff and support staff use facial mask, wash their hands with soap and water as a measures
of prevention of transmission of Covid -19
WEAKNESS
• Health centres have an incinerator but is not functioning, waste are collected and brought by a
cleaning company SINAIUS CLEANING SERVICE LTD
• color-coding system of health care waste are not considered while using dustbins
• Support staff are not vaccinated on hepatitis B (they work at risk of being exposed with
hazardous waste)
• Waste are not separated according to the type of waste
• (Infectious Waste, General Waste, Chemical Waste, Sharps Waste) infectious waste are mixed
with no infectious
Waste
• Workers interviewed some of them are not trained on waste management and all support staff
are not equipped with all required PPE’s

INTERVENTIONS
1. Explain and demonstrate to support staff in the separation of waste according to the type of
waste
2. Explain support staff how to use PPE’s and precaution in manipulation of hazardous waste
3. Advocate to avail PPE’s for all support staff (overalls, surgical mask, bottes and large gloves)
4. Advocate for the immunization of hepatitis B for support staff to minimize impact of B
hepatitis contamination.
