MODULE 14
INTRODUCTION TO ACTION RESEARCH

14.1 EXPOSURE
Reading an Example of Classroom-Based Action Research – N/A

14.2 PARTICIPATION
Analysing the Sample Classroom-Based Action Research

After reading an example of a classroom-based action research, answer the following questions.
Expound and discuss your answers.

1. What exactly is the classroom problem that Melinda wanted to help address or solve?
-The classroom problem that Melinda wants to help or solve is consistent occurrence of
high level noise of the learners.
2. What processes helped Melinda to think of the possible causes why a problem exists?
-Melinda talked her CT about her concern and she was advised to go to the library or
search to internet to get ideas on how to deal with learners have consistent occurrence of
high level noise in the classroom.
3. What processes helped Melinda to think of an action, which implemented, will help
address or solve the classroom problem?
-First, Melinda look for the possible cause of the classroom problem. Second, she jut
down and she choose the best that could help her to solve the problem. Lastly, she
observe the remedial lessons and decide what action to be implement to solve the
problem.
4. What exactly was the action that Melinda wanted to implement?
-Melinda believes that setting guidelines and monitoring to the remedial lessons will
solve the high level noise in the classroom.
5. What was the expectation of Melinda regarding the effect of the action she wanted to
implement?
-She expects that setting proper guidelines and monitoring of the activities will make
learners kept busy and feel motivated to focus on completing their tasks.
6. What processes did Melinda employ to find out if her expectation regarding the effect of
the action is confirmed?
-She asked her co-intern to note down the number of times , the pupils exhibited the
following behaviours which she believed contributed to the high level noise occurring
during remedial lessons.
7. What are the results of the implementation of the action?
-It resulted to decrease the high level of noise from the pupils. The monitoring activities
had a positive effect to kept learners busy to finish their tasks and it lead for the
improvement of learning outcome of the students.
8. What are the conclusions deduced from the classroom-based action research?
-She concluded that the action and the implementation of the use of guidelines and
monitoring pupils in the remedial sessions had a positive effect. The immediate effect is
the decrease of noise level in the classroom.

Developing an Awareness and Understanding of the Different Processes Involved in
Implementing a Classroom-based Action Research – N/A

14.4 INTERNALIZATION
Identifying the Different Processes Involved in Implementing a Classroom-based Action
Research
On the left column below are the significant stages of implementing an action research based on
the conceptual framework discussed previously. On the right column, describe the processes
applied by Melinda in her action research, corresponding to each step/process.
Steps in the Conceptual Framework Corresponding Step or Processes in the
Sample Action Previously Presented Action Research
a. Diagnosing (identifying a problem) -Melinda identify the problem through
classroom observation
-She identify the factors that cause the
occurrence of high level noise of the pupils in
the classrooms.
b. Action Planning (considering -Melinda talked her CT about her concern and
alternative courses of action) she was advised to go to the library or search to
internet to get ideas on how to deal with
learners have consistent occurrence of high
level noise in the classroom.

c. Taking Action (selecting course of

action) -Melinda look for the possible cause of the
classroom problem. She jut down and she
choose the best that could help her to solve the
problem. And she observe the remedial lessons
and decide what action to be implement to
solve the problem. She set guidelines and
monitoring to the remedial lessons will solve
the high level noise in the classroom. She
asked her co-intern to note down the number of
times , the pupils exhibited the following
behaviours which she believed contributed to
the high level noise occurring during remedial
lessons. She use monitoring sheet to observe it.
d. Evaluating (studying consequence of
an action)
-Melinda studied and analysed the data and
came up from the findings after the
observation. She found out that setting
guidelines and implementation of the action
solve her observations.
e. Specifying Learning (identifying
general findings)
-Melinda concluded that the action and the
implementation of the use of guidelines and
monitoring pupils in the remedial sessions had
a positive effect. The immediate effect is the
decrease of noise level in the classroom.
