My Learning Episode Overview

In the Philippines, only those with a professional license are authorized to

teach.
There are fundamental requirements to be a professional teacher. One has to
graduate in a college with a baccalaureate degree, pass the Licensure
Examination for Teachers (LET), be a member of professional teacher
organizations and abide by the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers. In
addition, teachers must grow in the profession by undertaking continuing
professional development/education.

Close Encounter with a Beginning Professional Teacher (1-3 Years Teaching

Experience)

MS. SHEILA SAMANTELA

Ms. Sheila Samantela of Oas
Polytechnic School is a beginning
professional MAPEH teacher. She
completed her degree at Bicol
University IPESR last 2005.
She said; I am fortunate enough to
be given a chance to finish my studies and have my
profession as a teacher. My Alma Matter (Bicol University)
molds me to become a person who is ready to face the real
battle of life. My school teaches me the things I need to know
to become an effective and efficient teacher. I undergo
seminars and trainings like practice teaching and etc.

She passed the Licensure Examination for Teachers

(LET) in her second try last 2013 and she acquired a rating of
76%.
She started to teach as professional teacher last
September 2015 and what makes her happy now as a teacher
is when her students learn from her. She is very disappointed
to the government because of the low salary for teachers, the
reason why some teachers are quitting on their teaching

Close Encounter with a Young Professional Teacher
(4-10 Years Teaching Experience)

MR. RICARDO REMONTE

Mr. Ricardo Remonte is a

Young Professional English Teacher
from Oas Polytechnic School. He
came from a seminary and decided to
continue his teaching profession.
He is satisfied with his job as
professional teacher because for twoconsecutive years of teaching he
is awarded as 1st runner up for Outstanding Teacher in Libon, Albay.
For him, it is an affirmation because he was recommended by his
peers and by the school principal where he teaches. What makes him
happy as a teacher is the love and respect that came from his
students. He is happy also when his learners learn from him and if
they acquire the necessary objective of the lesson that taught by Mr.
Remonte. He told me that sometimes he felt tired because of paper
works that need to accomplish like making lesson plan, visual aid,
checking of papers and etc.

He told me that he’s future plan is to finish his Master Degree

and work hard to be promoted as principal.

Close Encounter with a Mentor/Master Teacher
(11-15 Years Teaching Experience)

MS. JEANETTTE CELON

Ms. Jeannette Celon is a

Science teacher from Oas Polytechnic
School. She teaches for almost 11
years. In her long time in teaching, he is
satisfied with her profession because
being a teacher is what she really want
ever since.

She feels fulfilled and happy when her students are active,
cooperative and innovative in their learning’s and when her students
are able to understand or learn the lesson she gave. In this way, she
works more hard for his student because she is motivated by the
results of her teaching. Sometimes, she can’t avoid feeling sadness
because of some students that are left behind and some students are
practicing ill-disciplined.

According to her, new teachers are more lucky than to those old
teachers because we are now in progressive curriculum compared to
them that they are belong before to the group of teachers who practice
traditional curriculum.

As of now, she doesn’t receive any awards or citations. She do

believes that she will retire in teaching with higher profession, maybe
she will become a principal or supervisor.

Close Encounter with an Expert/ Sterling Teacher
(15 Years Teaching Experience)

MR. EDGARDO LLANERA

Mr.Edgardo Llanera Jr. is a

professional Mapeh teacher from
Oas Polytechnic School. He
teaches for almost 15 years and it
serves as his devotion.

He is satisfied with his job as a professional teacher

for the past years because he able to produce learners who
become professionals. He feel fulfilled when he teach his
learners and learn from him, and when he knows that his
learners are enjoying with him. What makes him sad
sometimes is that most of the student is not extremely
exerting effort on a given task and when they got failing
grades.

Teaching itself, knowledge and expertise that he can

impart to his learners is one of his most significant
contribution to the teaching profession. He is hoping also to
be promoted as principal or supervisor in the near future but if
there’s an opportunity that knocks his door, he wanted to
work abroad.
He was promoted as Teacher II three years ago. He
believes that he got promoted because he is qualified to the
requirements and there’s a vacant position. Financial
adjustments are the benefit he gets when he got promoted.

Close Encounter with Retired Teacher
(15 Years Teaching Experience)

MRS. JOSEFINA FLORIN

Mrs. Josefina Florin is a

college teacher instructor from
Polangui Community college and
Bicol University Polangui
Campus. She was still teaching in
for almost 40 years. She has no
regrets in taking this kind of
profession.

Teaching is a good vocation for people who has

dedication for it. She was working with people for a good
socialization manner. Academic advancement, dedication of
service and self advancement are some motivational factors
she used to become a good teacher. Be yourself, identify what
you want and want you don’t. Be a role model to the student
you handled, personality and attitude is greater than
intelligence when working to others people you encounter.

It stands to reason also that teacher must observe

punctuality and appropriate tidiness and dress: it is not possible
to demand such behavior from students if the teacher doesn’t
set the standards.

My Reflections/Insights

Based on the answers given by the teachers you interviewed, do they reflect
a true professional teacher? Why do you think so?

A professional teaching qualification does not make you a professional, in the

true sense of the word. Belonging to a particular profession does not automatically
guarantee that the service you provide is a professional one. Hence, teaching as a
professional is a hard thing to do because it encompasses many roles to be done
well

Based on the interviews you conducted, is being a professional teacher a

fulfilling job? Why?

Absolutely Yes!, The professional teacher accepts personal responsibility for

teaching students character qualities that will help them evaluate the
consequences of and accept the responsibility for their actions and choices. They
strongly affirm parents as the primary moral educators of the students.
Nevertheless, I believe all educators are obligated to help foster civic virtues such
as integrity, diligence, responsibility, cooperation, loyalty, fidelity, and respect-for
the law, for human life, for others, and for self.

Considering that you will be a future professional teacher, what standards of

behaviors should you uphold based on the Code of Ethics for Professional
Teachers?

The professional teacher assumes responsibility and accountability for his or

her performance and continually strives to demonstrate competence, maintains
sound mental health, physical stamina, and social prudence necessary to perform
the duties of any professional assignment, continues professional growth and
complies with written local school policies and applicable laws and regulations that
are not in conflict with this code of ethics.

51
My Learning Portfolio

Teacher education programs must help teaching candidates to link the

moral purpose that influences them with the tools that will prepare them to
engage in productive change.

Teachers can be popular just because they are friendly and helpful, but
to be truly professional and effective they need other qualities. Students may
not be able to put their finger on just why one teacher is more effective than
another but we need to be able to identify the skills and behavior we require in
a true professional.

A professional teacher needs to be confident without being arrogant.

Nobody can expect to have all the answers, so if a student asks a real stinker,
the professional teacher should be able to admit defeat but offer to find out
more for the student. And they must carry that promise out.

Proper preparation is another crucial requirement of professionalism.

When the teacher enters the classroom s/he should have all the required
materials and the lesson plan ready.

Interaction with the group needs professional standards of behavior:

polite, firm and fair just about sum it up. And in orchestrating the class the
teacher must give everyone their chance to contribute and should be flexible
enough to modify lessons if they are obviously not going to plan. Indeed a fall-
back position is part of good planning.
