Part 1
Theodore wants to participate in the Olympic racetrack using his new
formula 1 car, McLaren. In his training, he is uniformly accelerating at 5 s
and it covers 450 m and another 3 s to cover the next 450 m. Find the
acceleration of Theodore’s car.

Given:
x1 = 450m t1 = 5s
x2 = 450m t2 = 3s
xtotal = 900m a=?

Solution:
Since the acceleration is uniform

a= = =

(a)(5s) = V2 - V1 eq. 1.1

(a)(3s) = V3 - V2 eq. 1.2
(a)(8s) = V3 - V1 eq. 1.3

2ax1 = V22 - V12 ⇒ 2a(450m) = V22 - V12 eq. 2.1

2ax2 = V32 - V22 ⇒ 2a(450m) = V32 - V22 eq. 2.2
2axtotal = V32 - V12 ⇒ 2a(900m) = V32 - V12 eq. 2.3

Substituting eq. 1.3 to eq. 2.3

(a)(1800m) = V32 - (V3 - (a)(8s))2
(a)(1800m) = V32 - V32 + (a)(16s)(V3) - (a2)(64s2)
1800m = V3(16s) - (a)(64s2)
225m = V3(2s) - (a)(8s2)
V3(2s) = 225m + (a)(8s2) eq. 3.1
Substituting eq. 1.2 to eq. 2.2
(a)(900m) = V32 - (V3 - (a)(3s))2
(a)(900m) = V32 - V32 + (a)(6s)(V3) - (a2)(9s2)
900m = V3(6s) - (a)(9s2)
300m = V3(2s) - (a)(3s2)
V3(2s) = 300m + (a)(3s2) eq. 3.2

Since eq. 3.1 and eq. 3.2 are equal

225m + (a)(8s2) = 300m + (a)(3s2)
75m = (a)(5s2)

a=

a = 15m/s2

In his training, the acceleration of Theodore’s car is 15m/s2
