arithmetic sequence

Answer the given short refreshment activity.

B. Drill / Activating Prior Knowledge 1. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, _. What is the next number?

Review activity through www.kahoot.it
2. 1, 4, 7, 10, 13, _, _. What are the next 2
remaining numbers?

3. 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, _, _, _?

Game pin will be given upon starting the quiz.

It refreshes our mind about sequence.
Yes ma’am!
Okay class, how was the short quiz?
So, in that short quiz lot of you class have notice
that there is a pattern in every sequence.

Let say in number 1, the pattern is that you add 1

in every succeeding number. And in number 2
you add 3. Students will raise their hands.

What about in number 3?

Yes, Rose Gwyneth The pattern in number 3 ma’am is that in every
succeeding number you multiply it by 2.
Yes, correct!

Students will raise their hands.

So from what you have observe, what do you

think is our topic for today? Patterns and Sequences

Yes, Jeven.

Yes, you’re right.

C. Activity Ok ma’am!

So from that I will group you into 3 groups and

answer the group activity that I prepared.

I will share to you the questions and the first

automatically be recorded on your performance
for today.

Am I clear class? Students will write their answers on the chat box.
Ok let’s begin.

What is the next number? (expected answer: 20)

What is the 10th number? (expected answer: 36) Students will write their answers on the chat box.
0, 4, 8, 12, 16, ____

(Will recognize the first correct answer)

What is the next number? (expected answer: -

16)
What is the 8th number? (expected answer: -26) Students will write their answer on the chat box.
9, 4, -1, -6, -11, ______

(Will recognize the first correct answer)

The milkman comes every other day. He came

on July 17; will he come on Aug 12? Consider
that you are given the set of dates: 17, 19, 21,
(expected answer YES)

(Will recognize the first correct answer and

explain briefly how they come up with the
answer)

I see that all of you has a prior knowledge about

patterns and sequences.

Thank you very much class for your participation.

So now, let us proceed with our topic for today.

An arithmetic sequence is a list of numbers with

a definite pattern. If you take any number in the
sequence then subtract it by the previous one,
and the result is always the same
or constant then it is an arithmetic sequence.

The constant difference in all pairs

of consecutive or successive numbers in a
sequence is called the common difference,
denoted by the letter dd. We use the common
difference to go from one term to another. How?
Take the current term and add the common
difference to get to the next term, and so on.
That is how the terms in the sequence are
generated.

 If the common difference between

consecutive terms is positive, we say that
the sequence is increasing.
 On the other hand, when the difference is
negative we say that the sequence is
decreasing.

Example 1: Find the next term in the sequence

below.

First, find the common difference of each pair of

consecutive numbers.

 15−7 = 8
 23−15 = 8
 31−23 = 8
Yes ma’am!
Since the common difference is 88 or written
as d=8d=8, we can find the next term
after 3131 by adding 88 to it. Therefore, we
have 31 + 8 = 3931+8=39.

Did you understand class?

Example #2: Find the seventh term (7th) in the

sequence below.

Sometimes you may encounter a problem in an

arithmetic sequence that involves fractions. So
be ready to use your previous knowledge on how
to add or subtract fractions.

Also, always make sure that you understand

what the question is asking so that you can have
the correct strategy to approach the problem.

In this example, we are asked to find the seventh

term, not simply the next term. It is a good
practice to write all the terms in the sequence
and label them, if possible.

Now we have a clear understanding of how to

work this out. Find the common difference, and
use this to find the seventh term.

Finding the common difference,

(NO/YES ma’am)
Then we find the 7th term by adding the common
difference starting with the 4th term, and so on.
Here’s the complete calculation.

Since you don’t have any questions let’s proceed

with another activity which will be answered
individually to enhance your knowledge about
arithmetic sequence. You may answer this
activity within 5mins. only and send your answers
on my official messenger account (Georgie C.

Direction: Determine what number is being

added to each number (term) to get the next
number. Then find the next two numbers.

Okay class time is up. Please send your answers

now.
