Module Title/Topic/Lesson Week 3, Module 3, Project Plan for Household

1: Linens, Day 1-3

INTRODUCTION

Lesson 1, “Project Plan for Household Linens” is the first preparatory step in
planning a project. This is a careful and systematic planning on how to sew the household
linens, what you plan to sew, the materials you need, and how you will go about the
project. 14
The following are guidelines to consider in planning a project. First, once you have
chosen the design, list the materials needed. Next, choose the fabric most suitable for
the project. Then, plan the steps to be followed in making the project. And last, prepare
the sewing tools and materials. 15

In the succeeding lessons, you will learn more about the supplies/materials and
tools you will be needing for the household linen project, the fabric preparation before
cutting and sewing, the drafting of patterns, the actual sewing of household linens and
also how you will assess your finished product with the use of rubrics.

At the end of lesson 1, you are expected to prepare your own project plan for your
household linen.

INFORMATION 1

A project plan is the key to a successful project. It is the most important document
that needs to be created when starting any project. 16

Project Plan is not only a guide in making or accomplishing a product. It also

provides a shared vision for what the project will accomplish. Because of project plan,
you can avoid mistakes while doing the steps/ procedures. It also helps you to save
money, time, and energy.

The parts of the project plan:

I. Name of a Project – This is the name of the project you will be doing.
II. Objectives - Give at least three reasons why you are making the project.
III. Sketch– This is an illustration of the project to be done for clarity and
understanding.
IV. Supplies/Materials and Tools – This is the list of the materials and tools
you will be needing in the process of doing the project with their
descriptions like the quantity, the unit cost and the total cost.
V. Procedure – This is the systematic way that must be followed in making
the project.
VI. Evaluation – This is the checking of the quality of the finished product
with the use of rubrics and scorecard.

2: Project / Day 4

Introduction

One of the parts of the project plan making is “tools and materials”. You cannot
pursue your project without this part. So, today’s lesson, “identifying supplies/materials
and tools needed for the project” is an extension of Week 3 - Module 3, Lesson 1.

Identifying the needed supplies/materials and tools for the project must be given
careful planning and analysis. Taking into consideration the availability of the
supplies/materials and tools in the local market as well as the quality and cost that entails
with it.

Tools as you know are very important in project making. These are the devices
you will use to carry out the step-by-step procedures in finishing the product particularly
a project. Without tools, no one can perform anything. And if your tools are not in their
perfect conditions, accomplishing something will be very difficult and time consuming.

Identifying supplies/ materials is also essential in order to produce good results.

To create the best product, you should know the needs of the users, the design and the
style. Always consider the quality of your supplies/materials by making sure that the color
does not fades easily and the materials are strong and durable. There are supplies and
materials that shrink when wet, so as much as possible avoid this kind of supplies. Most
importantly, you have to consider also the cost of the supplies/materials without
disregarding the good quality and durability of it.

At the end of the lesson, you are expected to list down 5 examples of
supplies/materials and another 5 examples of tools needed in sewing project.

BUENA, UBANTE 20
TLE 6 – HOME ECONOMICS – MODULE 3

LESSON PROPER/INFORMATION:

Supplies/materials and tools differ from each other. Supplies and materials are
both consumable within a certain period. They are those that will be used for the
production of a project. 17 However, tools are devices that can be used to achieve a task
but not consumed in the process.

To easily understand the difference between supplies/materials and tools, you take
a look at the picture below. Cutting is part of sewing project. Usually, we need to cut
something to put shape into the project.

https://www.alamy.com/scissors-cutting-blue-fabric-close-up-of-hands-of-a-young-girl-seamstress-who-cuts-fabric-image345217681.html

The consumable resources or the supplies/materials in the picture is the fabric. It

is consumable because once you cut it, it already reached its end-life. You cannot return
it to its original shape. You cannot cut the fabric if you have no device for cutting. Here,
the tool used for cutting is a dressmaker’s shear. Unlike the fabric, the dressmaker’s shear
is still usable after you are done cutting the fabric.

BUENA, UBANTE 21
TLE 6 – HOME ECONOMICS – MODULE 3

In your EPP5-HE, you already learned some of the supplies/materials and tools in
sewing projects. It means, you can now identify and give the names of the pictures below.
To do this, choose your answer from the box and write it on your TLE 6 test notebook.

3: the Project/Day -5

INTRODUCTION:

In Module 3, Day 4, you learned that supplies and materials are also called
consumable items. Consumable because once you used it, you cannot return it into its
original size and shape. Whereas tools are items that cannot be consumed even if you
use it repeatedly for some time.

Today’s lesson is a continuation of Day 4, however, we will focus on the different

kinds of supplies/materials and tools that are actually needed in the process of sewing
the household linens.

When we say “actually needed” it means not all sewing supplies/materials and
tools you learned from previous lessons can be used in a certain sewing project. Your
sewing project for TLE6HE is about household linens. More specifically, it is about sewing
“Envelope Pillowcase”. Because of the simplicity of your project, only the basic
supplies/materials and tools will be needed to finish your project.

After the lesson, you are expected to make a list of all the needed
supplies/materials and tools you will actually use in your project “Envelope Pillowcase” in
your TLE 6 notebook.

LESSON PROPER/INFORMATION:

Parts of sewing project are the following: Make a Project Plan, Fabric Prepping,
Drafting of Pattern, Pattern Layout, Cutting of Fabric, Sewing of Household Linens and
Evaluation/Assessment. There are 7 parts, but we will only focus on the
supplies/materials and tools needed starting from the fabric prepping up to the actual
sewing of household linens.

BUENA, UBANTE 28
TLE 6 – HOME ECONOMICS – MODULE 3

Below are examples of supplies/materials and tools needed in different sewing

activities except project plan making and evaluation/assessment.

1. Fabric Prepping
Supplies/Materials – Laundry soap, water, electricity and fabric
Tools – Basin, electric iron, iron board, water sprayer, dressmaker’s
shear and clipper

2. Drafting of Pattern
Supplies/Materials – pattern paper
Tools – L square/yard stick, pins and tape measure, tailored chalk, pencil
and scissors

3. Pattern Layout
Supplies/Materials – pattern paper, carbon paper, fabric and thread
Tools – Tracing wheel, L square/yard stick, tape measure, pins/pin cushion,
tailored chalk and hand needle

4. Cutting of Fabric
Supplies/Materials – fabric, pattern paper
Tools – pins/pin cushion, fabric shear and rotary cutter (optional)

5. Sewing of Household Linens (Envelope Pillow Case)

Supplies/Materials – fabric and thread
Tools – fabric shears, sewing needle, hand needle, thimble, seam ripper,
threader (optional), pins/pin cushion, tape measure
Equipment – Sewing machine

The list of supplies/materials and tools needed in every sewing activity as shown
above provides you an insight that the needed supplies/materials and tools might differ
from each activity depending on the kind of sewing project.

However, there are some supplies/materials and tools in sewing that are not
needed in our sewing project such as: pattern weights, french curve, hip curve, tweezers,
sewing gauge, binder clips, cutting mat, garter, zipper, cord, ribbons and more.

Cut the fabric into three pieces. For the front of the pillow, you will need one square
21”x21”. For the back, you will need two rectangles, 13”x21” each.

To ease sewing and turning, round the corners of the pillow cover slightly. To
prevent bulk at the seams, finish the raw edges using a zig-zag stitch or an overlong
stitch. Finish all edges except the straight edge on each rectangle. Fold about ¼” of
the edge over twice to completely encase the raw edge and stitch it down with a
straight stitch.

Sew all around the pillow, using a seam allowance.

Identifies Supplies/Materials and Tools Needed for the Project
The difference between supplies/materials and tools is that supplies/materials are
consumable while tools are not. It is consumable because you can’t return it into its
original size and shape once you used it. Whereas, it is not consumable because you
can still use it repeatedly for a longer period of time until it wears out.

For me, the most important supply/material actually needed in sewing project
is the “fabric”, because the main ingredient we need in sewing an envelope
pillowcase is the fabric. It is important also because we need to carefully choose and
check the quality of the fabric to satisfy our “taste of style” and to realize what we
expect from our finished product.
