1. What was the short film about?

(200 words)
Heneral Rizal features the untold story of heroism of Paciano Rizal, who was the elder brother of
the National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal. No film has ever been made about Paciano, mostly are about
his brother. However, Heneral Rizal unveils the story about how the patriotic and proficient great
general of revolution, Paciano Rizal also fought for his own Country and for the Filipinos against
the colonizers together with other heroes like Andres Bonifacio. Furthermore, the film itself tells
us on how Paciano is angry from the beginning of the film up to the end because of so much
unanswered questions for his brother particularly for desiring his death. The film sadly portrayed
the tragedy that Paciano Rizal also sacrificed and suffered persecution together with his family
and fellow Filipinos in the hands of the colonizers, and how he fought for them and supported
and protected his beloved brother, but still, unlike Jose Rizal, Paciano’s heroism did not brought
him honors in terms of being remembered. Heneral Rizal tried to tell the viewers about Paciano’s
contributions may be unknown as that of his brother’s, but as a Filipino, we should honor his
great influence and in serving as a lighthouse to our national hero.

2. Which events and issues were you unfamiliar with prior to watching the film? (100 words)
The life of Dr. Jose Rizal taught to us during High School days. I am familiar of what Rizal did and
suffered for the sake of the Country. I am also familiar that the country was colonized by the
Spaniards and Americans. However, after I watched the film, I did not know that all along in Dr.
Jose Rizal’s journey, he had a very supportive and loving brother in his side and that refers to
Paciano Rizal. Due to their Parent’s old age, the heavy tasks feel on Paciano’s shoulders and that
is to give up most of what he had and carry the burden of working hard just to support his
brother financially while studying in Europe.

3. What previously held assumptions that you believed in or though you already knew about does
the film challenge? (100 words)
After watching the film, it brought me back to our lessons in High School that Spaniards and
Americans are connected in oppressing and torturing the Filipinos. I thought that Spaniards has
nothing to do with the Americans during that time. However, the film reminds me that the
Spaniards sold us to the Americans and that some Catholic groups were given money to help
achieve their plans in colonizing Philippines. Also, I did not know that its Jose Rizal’s death has
placed an end to his parent’s life. Lastly, I thought that in Rizal’s family, Jose Rizal was the only
one who fought for our country, but here’s Paciano Rizal who also sacrificed and suffered
everything to fight for his brother and for the country.

4. What is your interpretation of the final scene in the film? (100 words)
My interpretation on the final scene of the film is that Filipinos do not know that it is Paciano
Rizal who is behind Jose Rizal’s back in His fight for the Philippines. The final scene portrays the
regrets of Paciano Rizal, all his efforts and sacrifices for his brother was in vain because Jose Rizal
chooses to be executed by the oppressors. It is in the final part which Paciano has lots of
questions that he wants Dr. Jose Rizal to answer it all because for him, if Dr. Jose Rizal wasn’t
executed and did not chose death, the Philippines would be better.
