GEC 02 – Readings in the Philippine History

Learning Task #1

1) Create a mnemonic for the word “HISTORY” based on the different ideas and
concepts that you have learned from the previous discussion. Provide a brief discussion
why did you chose such terms in general (not per term[s] if possible).

H – Human
I – Investigate
S – Sources
T – Truth
O –Old
R – Records
Y – Yesterday

- I chose these terms because it describes what history is all about. I think that
these terms I chose is what we need to learn history.

2) Discuss “People who does not know history tends to repeat the mistakes of the past”” in
200-300 words. (Citations are encouraged and write the reference at the end of your
discussion)

- Those who are ignorant of history are vulnerable to repeat past mistakes. If we don’t
study, dig deeper, and learn our history, all of us will be losers. Yes, we will all be losers
because, according to the quote, being arrogant about history will cause you to repeat
past mistakes without realizing it since you do not know history. As a consequence, we
must study history in order to understand what happened throughout history. Through
history, we can learn how past societies, systems, ideologies, governments, cultures and
technologies were built, how they operated, and how they have changed. The rich history
of the world helps us to paint a detailed picture of where we stand today. Knowing
history helps us understand and grapple with complex questions and dilemmas by
examining how the past has shaped (and continues to shape) global, national, and local
relationships between societies and people. According to a philosopher George
Santayana’s oft-quoted aphorism: “Those who cannot remember the past are
condemned to repeat it”. Learning history enables us to develop better understanding of
the world in which we live. Building knowledge and understanding of historical events
and trends, especially over the past century, enables us to develop a much greater
appreciation for current events today.
