Sucesos De Las Islas Filipinas (Translated in

English as “Events of Philippine Islands) is an
account of the history of the Spanish colony
in the Philippines during the 16th century.
⮚ A historical account
describing the scenarios in
the Philippines from 1493 to
1603 under the Spaniards.

It is also the first historical
book to tackle the History of
the Philippines written by a
layman rather than a
religious chronicler.

● Describes the conditions of the

Philippines during the Spanish
conquest.
⮚ It centralizes the political,
social, and economic
aspects of the Philippines.

country and abused it. He
denounced and criticized.

● The book was published in two

volumes, both in 1609, by Casa de
Geronymo Balli in Mexico and
authorized by Viceroy Luis de Velasco
for publication.

● Morga’s work is based on firsthand

experiences or eyewitness accounts
of the events depicted.
⮚ Furthermore, as he admits,
survivors from Legazpi's

book in Manila, and he could
consult them as well.

The Chapter

Legaspi to Pedro de Acuna, while the
8th focuses on the Philippine Island
itself.

● CHAPTER 1: The first

discoveries of the Eastern
Islands: The Natives and Their
Conquerors.

➢ The first chapter of Morga's Sucesos

de las Islas Filipinas describes Asia's
rich and precious islands. Some
famous islands are Maluco, Celeves,
Tendaya, Luzon, Mindanao, and
Borneo, now called the Filipinas.

● CHAPTER 2: The government

of Dr. Francisco de Sande

➢ In 1575, Dr. Sande was appointed

governor and captain of the island of
the Philippines.

● CHAPTER 3: The government

of Don Gonzalo Ronquillo de
Penalosa.

➢ In 1580, Don Penalosa, a native

Arevalo and chief alguacil of the
Audencia of Mexico, became the
governor-general of the island of the
Philippines. In his government, Don
Fray Domingo de Salazar became the
first bishop of the Filipinas.
➢ In 1583, A fire broke out in the city of
Manila around lunchtime at the church
of the monastery of St. Augustine,
causing extensive damage to
products and property, as well as
putting some people at risk that the
city had to be rebuilt with considerable
effort and labor, leaving the Spaniards
bankrupt and destitute.

● CHAPTER 4: The government
of Dr. Santiago de Vera.

➢ In May of 1584, the president and

auditors of the Audiencia arrived in the
Filipinas, and Diego Ronquillo was
hailed as the governor. In his
government, numerous plans of revolt
and insurgence emerged and were
later discovered by the president of the
Audiencia, Sactiago de Vera, who was
then among the active leaders of
Manila and Pampanga.

● CHAPTER 5: The government

of Gomes Perez Dasmarinas.

➢ Different military and economic

achievements were made in his
government in 1590. Those are the
construction of a paid garrison and
cavaliers, pacifying Zambales and
Pintados, and constructing Manila Wall
and other artillery defenses. He also
paved the way for the submission of
the audiencia, increased trade with
China and neighboring countries, and
peace talks with Japan. But it was also
in his administration that the peace
and ties between Japan and Filipino
Spaniards began to crumble.

● CHAPTER 6: The government

of Don Franciso Tello

➢ In 1596, Governor Francisco Tello

was appointed governor-general of
the Filipinas, and upon his arrival,
Fray Ignacio de Santibanez was
appointed archbishop.

➢ In his government, he became

victorious over the combined forces of
Mindanaos and Ternatans. But docile
Japan plans to conquer the
Philippines, informed by a goodbye
letter from the Jesuits and Missionaries
being captive by the Japanese.

● CHAPTER 7: The government

of Don Pedro de Acuna.

➢ From 1602 to 1603, in his government,

he prioritized the delivery of vessels to
Nueva España to promote trade as
well as the transfer of laborers and
religious groups to Japan.

● CHAPTER 8: An account of the

Philippine Islands

➢ This is about how the natives looked,

their clothes and gold jewelry,
customs, and governance before the
Spaniards arrived. It is a glimpse of
how our ancestors lived before.
➢ The fauna and flora, geography, and
social classes that Rizal mainly
annotated in his work.

Antonio Morga’s Purpose for Writing

the Sucesos

● To chronicle the deeds achieved by

our Spaniards, the discovery,
conquest, and conversion of the
Filipinas Islands - as well as various
fortunes that they have from time to
time in the great kingdoms and among
the pagan people surrounding the
islands.
● Morga’s work also aimed to defend
the actions and legitimacy of the
Spanish presence in the Philippines.

Rizal’s Annotation

Its long Spanish title is “Sucesos de las

Islas Filipinas por el Doctor Antonio de
Morga. Obra publicada en mejico en el año
de 1609, nuevamente sacada a luz y
anotada por Jose Rizal, y precedida de un
prologo del prof. Fernando Blumentritt,”
⮚ which translates to “Events
in the Philippine Islands
by Dr. Antonio de Morga. A
work published in Mexico
in 1609 was reprinted and
annotated by Jose Rizal
and preceded by an
introduction by Professor
Ferdinand Blumentritt.”

● Rizal accidentally found the book of

Antonio Morga’s Spanish Chronicle,
Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas, in
London City in the British Museum's
reading room.
⮚ But before, he had only
heard about the Spaniard
named Morga from his
uncle, Jose Alberto.

● The book, according to Rizal, narrates

the history of wars, intrigues,
diplomacy, and evangelization of the
Philippines in a somewhat disjointed
way.
● It took four months of intense historical
research and writing and almost a year
to publish his manuscript in Paris in
January 1890.

⮚ Rizal hand-copied the 351

pages of Morga's Sucesos
de las Islas Filipinas and
annotated every chapter.
Republic of the Philippines
City of Olongapo
GORDON COLLEGE
COLLEGE OF EDUCATION, ARTS, AND SCIENCES
3rd Floor, Gordon College Building, OCSC, Donor St. East Tapinac,
Olongapo City 2200

⮚ Some of his annotations

include different clarifications
and amplifications about the
details, refutations of
statements, and confirmation
of the credibility of sources.

● The Sucesos, as annotated by Rizal,

appeared for the first time in the
Philippines sixty-eight years later when
a publisher in Manila published the
new work in 1958 to contribute his bit
to the national effort to honor Rizal.

⮚ Does anyone here know why

Rizal chose to annotate
Antonio Morga’s “Sucesos De
Las Islas Filipinas”? Let’s use
the color game to select who
will answer (The teacher will
utilize the color game to call a
student).
⮚ Okay, Mr./Ms. _______ any
idea? ➢ He selected this book because he
considered it necessary to invoke the
testimony of an illustrious Spaniard who
governed the destinies of the Philippines
at the beginning of her new era and
missed the last moments of the ancient
Philippines, Ma’am/Sir.
⮚ That is very well said, Mr./Ms.
_______

What Led Rizal to Annotate Morga’s work?

● He intended to provide the Filipino

people with the history of the Spanish
era and present the authenticity of the
cultures and traditions of the country.
● He wanted to know precisely the
condition of the Philippines at the time
and before the Spanish colonization.
Because he theorized that the country
Republic of the Philippines
City of Olongapo
GORDON COLLEGE
COLLEGE OF EDUCATION, ARTS, AND SCIENCES
3rd Floor, Gordon College Building, OCSC, Donor St. East Tapinac,
Olongapo City 2200
was economically self-sufficient and
prosperous even before the Spanish
Regime.
● It also supports his theory that the
conquest of the Spaniards contributed
in part to the decline of the Philippines'
own culture and rich traditions.
⮚ During the Spanish Era, the
Filipinos were decimated,
demoralized, exploited, and
ruined by the Spanish
colonization.

⮚ To prove his claim, he had to

read Antonio de Morga's
work to identify the
somewhat real condition of
the Philippines by the time
the Spaniards arrived in the
country. And by his
annotations, he aimed for an
awakening to the Filipinos
and inspired them to social
and political reforms leading
to the pursuit of
independence from Spanish
Rule.

The Reason Why Rizal Choose to

Annotate Morga’s Sucesos de las
Islas Filipinas

● Morga was a layman and not a

religious chronicler.
● Rizal felt that Morga was more
"objective" than other religious writers.
● Morga was more sympathetic to
Indios.
● Morga was not only an eyewitness but
a major actor in the events of his
narration.
Republic of the Philippines
City of Olongapo
GORDON COLLEGE
COLLEGE OF EDUCATION, ARTS, AND SCIENCES
3rd Floor, Gordon College Building, OCSC, Donor St. East Tapinac,

Rizal chose Morga's work for several
considerations:

● Morga's book was rare and was

originally published in Mexico in 1609.
● It was the only civil, as opposed to the
religious or ecclesiastical history of the
Philippines written during the colonial
period.
⮚ Meaning to say, there were
no sights and stories of
miracles being told in
Morga’s work.
● This secular account (Morga’s) was
more objective and trustworthy than
those written by the religious
missionaries who were liberally
sprinkled with tales of miracles and
apparitions.
● It appeared more sympathetic, in
contrast to the friar account where
there is bias and downright racism in
its tone and interpretation.
● Morga was a primary source as he
was an eyewitness on the contact of
the Philippine people with Spain.

⮚ Rizal also argued that

Filipinos already had their
own culture and did not
require any civilization or
religion from the Spaniards.

Rizal's Purpose in annotating

Morga's work

● To awaken the consciousness of the

Filipinos regarding their glorious ways
of the past.

⮚ It sets out to evoke

civilizational consciousness
among Filipinos during the
Spaniard colonization.

● To correct what has been distorted

about the Philippine history
during the Spanish Era.
● To prove that Filipinos have their own
culture even before the Spaniards.
The Philippines had a higher
standard of authenticity of culture
and morality even before the
Spaniards' arrival.

ANNOTATIONS OF RIZAL CHAPTER 8: AN

ACCOUNT TO PHILIPPINE ISLANDS

The Oriental Islands:Philippines

Morga:Some known Islands were Luzon,
Mindoro, Tendaya, Capul, Leyte, Samar,
Cebu, Mindanao, etc.
Rizal: The Island Tendaya is challenging to
determine since the island might relate to
either the chief Tandaya or the Southeastern
region of Samar known as Ibabao or Zibabao.

Geography (Location)
Morga: The Philippines was uninhabitable
and extends up to 12 degrees south latitude.
Rizal: Rizal said that in Ptolemy’s geography
Philippines was not deserted and was
actually habitable and it is actually at exactly
25 degrees and 40 minutes latitude north,
until 12 degrees latitude south.
Geography (Climate)
Morga: Winters and summers are opposite of
those in Europe. Rainy weather is from June
to September and summer is from October to
May.
Rizal:In Manila, December to February, the
temperature goes down more done it does
during August to September.
Culture and Society (Body Tattoo)
Morga: Draws a pattern fist before putting
black powder where the blood oozes out.

to, whether might be dangerous to their
health.
Rizal:Rizal believed that Indios are very
careful not to take a bath during siesta, after
luncheon, first two days of catarrh.

Culture and Society (Customs and

Practices)

Morga: The marriage custom is prominent.

Marriages between the principals and their
fellow principals or nobles are shared among
the natives.

Rizal:While Rizal emphasizes that native

women, unlike their European counterparts,
never lost their noble titles. In marriage it was
the groom who gave the bride’s parents a
dowry because they were losing a precious
daughters.

Culture and Society (Language)

Morga:The language spoken in Luzon and its

neighboring islands differs significantly from
that spoken in the Visayas.

Morga also said that a house with partners

and children are called “ Bahandin”.

Rizal: Cagayan, like the Ilocanos,

Zambalenos, Pampanga, Manila, and other
regions, has its distinct dialect.

While for Rizal, that in Tagalog, a house is

called

“Pamamahay”. Rizal said that it is impossible

that bahandin has been printed for bahayin,
because it is an obsolete derivative

Morga:Tribes on the Philippines cannot be

safe because of violence.
Rizal: They will always choose violence until
the Government enters because of their
inhumane ways.

Culture and Society (Government)

Morga: Morga said government barely

existed because there were no powerful
figure that ruled over communities, most of
them coastal, each with its own set of leaders
Rizal: Rizal argued that it is better that way,
why should the communities be beholden to
one ruler who didn’t even live among them
and was not familiar with their needs and
problems.

Culture and Society (Food)

Morga: They prefer to eat salt fish which

begin to decompose and smell.
The ordinary food of the natives is a very
small fish which they call “Laulau”

have eaten it and tasted it know that it is not
rotten.

“Dilis” which is eaten by natives in large
quantities.

mining is prevalent as it is the most common
way of getting of artifacts for trading.

Rizal: They also have rice and other crops

the wealth of encomienda,they abandoned
the mines.

Criticism of Rizal’s Annotation

● Ferdinand Blumentritt

➢ He is a friend of Jose Rizal that

also encouraged him to write
about the Philippines'
pre-colonial history.
➢ He is the one whom serve as an

letters especially the final letter
before Rizals execution.

Olongapo City 2200
➢ He wrote the introduction and
preface and criticized Rizal’s
Annotation as requested by
Rizal himself.

The Criticisms

1. Blumentritt’s Criticism

● Rizal censured the events of

past centuries according to the
concepts that correspond to
contemporary ideas

➢ As for Blumentritt, the historian

should not attribute to the men
of the sixteenth century the
broad horizon of ideas that
moves the nineteenth century.
Thus, a historian must not
coincide the events that
happened in the past with the
likewise of the new generation
or the concept and ideas of the
contemporary world.

● Against Catholicism

➢ As for Blumentritt, any events

Rizal finds regrettable for Spain
are not by religion but by the
person (the priests) facilitating
them. .
➢ The abuses and behavior of
many priests do not define the
religion itself. Through this, he
used history as a propaganda
weapon against the abuses of
the Spaniards. (That he is too
ambiguous that his works are
too historical and scholarly for
propaganda)

➢ But he praised Rizal’s Work as

being "Scholarly and
