Lesson 1: Arithmetic sequence

Learning Outcome(s): the learner will be able to:
 illustrates an arithmetic sequence,
 solve specified terms on arithmetic sequence, and
 determines arithmetic means.
Expected duration: 4 days
Lesson Outline:
 Solve arithmetic sequence.
 Identify the sum of an arithmetic sequence
 Find the arithmetic means

Pre – task:

A man is stock in a lost island and the only

way to get home is to pass through each 29
different island. But each island is guarded
by a troll wherein you have to give the
write answer to pass through.

Question is: if your island is 7 and the next

one is 10. What is the number of each
island?

Is a sequence wherein each term after the first is determined by adding a constant (d),
called the common difference?

Suppose the arithmetic sequence has terms a1, a2, a3,…, an. with d as the common
difference. From the definition, each term after a1 is determined by adding d to the previous term.

Derivation of the formula: suppose we have,

1st terma1

2nd term a2 = a1 + d

3rd term a3 = a2 + d = (a1 + d) + d = a1 + 2d

4th term a4 = a3 + d = (a1 + 2d) + d = a1 + 3d

5th term a5 = a4 + d = (a1 + 3d) + d = a1 + 4d

With this manner we have

nth term an = an – 1 + d = (a1 + (n – 2) d) + d = a1 + (n – 1) d

So

In an arithmetic sequence with first term a1 and

common difference d, the nth term an is given by the formula

an = a1 + (n – 1) d

Example: Given the arithmetic sequence 2, 4, 6, 8… determine the 15th term.

Solution: a1 = (first term) = 2

d = (common difference) = 2

n = (position/place of the missing term) = 15

a15 = (missing term) =?

Substitute all the given values in the formula of the arithmetic sequence.

an = a1 + (n – 1) d

a15 = 2 + (15 – 1)2 PEMDAS

a15 = 2 + (14)2

a15 = 2 + 28

a15 = 30

Then, the 15th term of the arithmetic sequence 2, 4, 6, 8, … is 30.

Example: Illustrate arithmetic sequence -4, -6, -8

-6

-8

Example: Solve for the 25th term in the given arithmetic sequence -4, -6, -8…

Solution:

Given:

a1 = (first term) = -4

d = (common difference) = -2

n = (position/place of the missing term) = 25

a25 = (missing term) =?

Substitute all the given values in the formula of the arithmetic sequence.

an = a1 + (n – 1) d

a25 = -4 + (25 – 1) (-2)

a25 = -4 + (24) (-2)

a25 = -4 + -48

a25 = -52

Then, the 25th term of the arithmetic sequence -4, -6, -8, … is -52.

Arithmetic Means

It is characterized as the term/s between any two non-consecutive terms of an arithmetic

sequence.

Given two numbers b and c, and a whole number k, we can insert k numbers a 1, a2, … ak
between b and c such that

b, a1, a2, … ak, c

forms an arithmetic sequence. The numbers a1, a2, … ak are called k arithmetic means of b and c.

Example: Insert three arithmetic means between 4 and 12.

M a t h e m a t i c s 1 0 W e e k 2 /Quarter 1

Solution:

Assume that the first number is the first term otherwise stated.

a1 = 4

a2 =?

Three arithmetic means bet. 4 and 12

a3 =?

a4 =?

a5 = 12 We use 12 as an

n=5

Substitute the givens in the formula of arithmetic sequence.

an = a1 + (n – 1) d

12 = 4 + (5 – 1) d

12 = 4 + (4) d

12 – 4 = 4d

2=d

Since the common difference is identified we can now solve for a2, a3, a4

Solution for a2:

a2 = a1 + d

=4+2

a2 = 6

Solution for a3:

a3 = a2 + d

=4+2

a3 = 8

Solution for a4:

a4 = a3 + d

=8+2

a4 = 10

Therefore, the arithmetic sequence is 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12

Example: Insert three arithmetic means between 7 and -5.

Solution:

Assume that the first number is the first term otherwise stated.

a1 = 7

a2 =?

Three arithmetic means bet. 7 and -5

a3 =?

a4 =?

a5 = -5 We use -5 as an

n=5

Substitute the givens in the formula of arithmetic sequence.

an = a1 + (n – 1) d

-5 = 7 + (5 – 1) d

-5 = 7 + (4) d

-5 – 7 = 4d

-3 = d

Since the common difference is identified we can now solve for a2, a3, a4

Solution for a2:

a2 = a1 + d

=7-3

a2 = 4

Solution for a3:

a3 = a2 + d

=4-3

a3 = 1

Solution for a4:

a4 = a3 + d

=1-3

a4 = -2

Therefore, the arithmetic sequence is 7, 4, 1, -2, and -5
