Learning Outcome(s):
At the end of the lesson, the learner will be able to:
 Generates patterns,
 Illustrates an arithmetic sequence, and
 Determines arithmetic means, nth term of an arithmetic sequence and sum of the terms of
a given arithmetic sequence.

Expected Duration: Two days

Lesson Outline:
 Introduction to patterns.
 Analyzing arithmetic sequence.
 Finding the nth term of an arithmetic sequence and sum of the terms of a given arithmetic
sequence.

Pre-Task: Find out how much you already know about the topics in this module. Analyze and
solve the problem.

Last year, CDE Hardware ordered 6 hammers in August, 9 hammers in

Arithmetic Sequence
What is a sequence? Sequence is a list of numbers in a specific order.

A sequence is arithmetic if the

differences between
consecutive terms are the same.

Look for a common difference between consecutive terms.

In an
arithmetic sequence, the number added to each term is constant. The constant number is
called the common difference, referring to the fact that the difference between two

successive yields the constant value that was added. To find the common difference,
subtract the chosen term from its preceding term.
To identify the general term of the sequence, use an = a1 + (n – 1)d, where an is
the term in a sequence, a1 is the first term and d for the common difference.

Examples:
Find the 50th term in the sequence -3, 0, 3, 6, …
an = a1 + (n – 1)d
a50 = -3 + (50 – 1)3
a50 = 144

Find the 25th term of the sequence having the first term is – 23 and the common
difference is 6.
an = a1 + (n – 1)d
a25 = -23 + (25 – 1)6
a25 = 121

100 is what term in the sequence – 2, 0, 2, 4, …?

an = a1 + (n – 1)d
100 = - 2 + (n – 1)2
100 = - 2 + 2n - 2
100 = - 4 + 2n
100 + 4 = 2n
104 = 2n
52 = n
