Time (s)

The diagram shows the speed-time graph of a car over a period of 80 seconds. The car starts from rest and
accelerates to reach a speed of 20 m/s in 15 seconds. It then travels at this constant speed for some time
before it decelerates at a constant rate of * trt until it comes to a stop.

(ii) Find the duration for which the car is travelling at constant speed. tzl
(iii) Given that the distance travelled by the car is given by the area under the graph, calculate the average
speed of the car for the whole journey. t3l

6. Mr Lim made a 380 km journey by car from Singapore to Selangor at an average speed of v km/h.
(i) Write down an expression, in terms of v,forthe numberof hours taken forthe journey. tll
On his return journey, his average speed was reduced by 15 km/h due to a traffic jam at the Causeway
checkpoint.
(iD Write down an expression, in terms of v, for the number of hours taken for the return journey. tl]
(iii) If the return journey takes 40 minutes longer, form an equation in v and show that it reduces to
v'- lsv - 8550 = 0. . [3]
(iv) Solve the equation v' - lsv - 8550 = 0, giving your answers correct to 2 decimal places. I3l
