Theoretical Framework

The trait and factor theory of Frank Parson (1909), the career is based on “matching

personal traits like skills, values and personality, with job factors, such as pay and work

environment”. Individual has a traits that can make them unique and represent as potential

based on the personality, interest, values and abilities. This theory describes that it is

possible to measure the talent or the characteristic of a one person to a certain job. And

that person may be match or fit to the appropriate job. Parson’s suggest that when an

individual are in jobs that are best suited to their abilities they perform best and their

productivity is highest. (Naim, n.d)

While in Social cognitive theory of Bandura (1986) the social, individual and behavior

which includes personality, interest, family, friends and environment, influence the

career choice of an individual. To have a good effect on lives no need to experience

things in person just to know what behaviors that reinforce. In observational learning, an

individual observe in environment that this behavior can be rewarded. It gives an idea of

consequences of behavior based on the others around. This idea of consequences serves

as reinforcement if a individual will do it or not. It’s not only environment but also as a

person can control the behavior whatever they do, which is also can affect to

environment. Human has a ability to think, plan and ensure that behavior is towards that

want to happen, process what is want to achieve in life to be happy but of course there

still reinforcement that wants to get approval from the family and others. The belief that

everyone has is self efficacy, to choose a decision or take an action if individual have a

low self efficacy in one thing, base on human ability to think it cannot have a good result

and can’t choose that decision. It can be influence by certain external factors and internal

factors.

Bandura is the most relevant to the aims of this study, given emphasis that choosing

a career especially students that we can see our choice based on our environment;

observational learning, the human agency such as ability to think, plan and ensure, the

self-efficacy; the confident on that choice. As a result social, individual and behavior will

play an important role to choose the right career of students. Social Cognitive Theory of

Bandura is more relevant to the current study.
