"A Man for Others"

"Dr. Paulo Campos emerged as a

‘man of excellence’, ‘man for
others’, and the man with a
progressive love of country, being
responsive to local and national
development.”
- Asserting Instructional Leadership in Reconstructing Dr. Paulo Campos
The Emilian Culture Formation Course; Priscilla R. Moriones,
Juanito L. Perando; 2018 (EAC-Cavite Research Journal)
"A Man for Others"

“As a young medical doctor trying to start with my medical career

I have been privileged to have special medical training in
Famous school of medicine and hospitals in the United States,
among which were John Hopkins Hospital, Harvard Medical
School, Oakridge Institute of Nuclear Studies, Educational
Exchange program under the Fullbright Program Such trainings
prepared me for the special field of research.”
"A Man for Others"

“As a researcher, I was particularly aided after I took courses from the
Oakridge Institute of Medicine becoming the first nuclear scientist in the
country when I established the First radioisotope Laboratory in the Far East
at the Philippine General Hospital with funds provided by the Philippine
Charity Sweepstakes. From the very beginning it was a very active research
laboratory doing routinary examinations like radioactive iodine uptake,
protein bound iodine determination, basal metabolism test, and other
related fields. Much of the works were on thyroid, diabetes, anemia, later on,
moving on to radioactive pharmaceuticals.”
"A Man for Others"

“The first international meeting called by the International Atomic

Energy Agency (IAEA) was in Manila and I was the director of that
international meeting, included among physicists.”

“Subsequently, on October 1976, I was named a member of a group of

seven scientists who were appointed by virtue of PD 1003, as the first
academicians of the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST).
I was elected by the group as President of this new science organization
partly because I happened to be at that time the incumbent president of
the national research Council. I was president for its first thirteen years.”
"A Man for Others"

I have also made major contribution in community health

program, which merited Presidential Commendation by then
President Ferdinand E. Marcos stating “Presidential
Commendation for his phenomenal success in organizing,
establishing and operating the comprehensive community
health program in Bay, Laguna in less than three years."
"A Man for Others"

Such achievements brought me not only around the

country, but more so to various parts of the world as
resource speaker in international conferences.
These efforts were recognized to have merited me
the honor of being conferred by the University of the
Philippines in Doctor of Science (honoris causa) in
1990, appointed Regent of UP in 1994, and the
towering recognition of National Scientist in Nuclear
Medicine of the republic of the Philippines in 1989.
THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE NUCLEAR RADIOISOTOPE LABORATORY

The first and biggest Radioisotope Laboratory in the country, and one of
the best equipped in the Far East was established at UP-PGH Medical
Center by Dr. Paulo C. Campos in 1955. This laboratory conducts
examination which at present cannot be done anywhere.

Although radioisotope radiation finds principal application in the

treatment of cancer, it is also used in diagnosis, treatment and research
in other phases of the medical field. Specifically, the use of radioisotopes
in destroying diseased tissues of the body, like the thyroid gland, which
otherwise would require surgery.
THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE NUCLEAR RADIOISOTOPE LABORATORY

Radioactive “cocktails” or iodine are given to patients with goiter

to facilitate evaluation, diagnosis and treatment. Radioactive
iodine laboratory will also be useful aid in the study of diseases of
the heart and the blood, tumors of the brain, the liver, the prostate,
and the bones.

The importance of this new technology in the diagnosis, treatment

and investigation of diseases is incalculable and its potentialities
unlimited.
ON WHY HE NEVER ENTERED POLITICS

“I have always been active in community projects all my life but never entered
politics... I did not entertain the idea. It did not seem right for me to be in politics
because I will just be forced to acquire material things in order to meet the demands
of politicians endorsing me. It seemed to conflict with my principles. It will only make
me unhappy because I’ll be forced to present an example for my children that I am
not very happy about. My principles tell me I have to show an example by attitude
and action. I m a doctor. I have made a living as a doctor. If I allowed myself to be
involved in the problems of my community it is simply because I was born, grew up,
and reside in Cavite. I sincerely feel that aside from my work, it is my responsibility to
my province and my province mate to help improve theirlot.” (an afterthought of 1986
when he was offered to be a compromise candidate for Governor of the province)
ON WHY HE NEVER ENTERCONTRIBUTIONS AS A CITIZEN OF MY

HOMETOWN AND PROVINCE AND MY COUNTRYED POLITICS

“ONE personal trait that I consider outstanding is my love for my country.

I take special pride and spend significant amount and effort and time to
make tangible and meaningful contributions for the community.”

Aside from being an educator and a doctor of medicine, I have always been
a farmer at heart, and so most of my community contributions are in support
of my vocation as a farmer, and in infrastructure development. I have spent
twenty years with the University of the Philippines and another twenty with
private institutions.
ON WHY HE NEVER ENTERCONTRIBUTIONS AS A CITIZEN OF MY

HOMETOWN AND PROVINCE AND MY COUNTRYED POLITICS

I have founded socio- civic organizations to help alleviate poverty in the country,
I founded the First Cavite Electric Company Inc., and went into livestock and
dairy farming..... I fostered deeper appreciation of our country’s history as I
founded the Cavite Historical Society.

I would place greater emphasis on the fact that this man, on his own, organized
and for a time headed, at least two hospitals for this country and a school that
has a high standard, and helped establish, build, and organize the De La Salle
University in Cavite. We also succeeded in continuing a school in Cavite
founded by my mother and father, the Immaculate Conception Academy.
Tribute to Dr. Paulo C. Campos DLSU-Cavite
“Bakit naman ako lalaktawan?”

Why was I being by-passed? He took courage and asked. To settle

the issue, the Chair simply asked who was most productive between
him and the appointed one. I was the chief resident in the 1950s.
The following year there was a selection of residents who will take
over as Chair of the Department of Medicine of the College of
medicine. I was an awardee of prestigious organizations like
winning the Abbott Research Contest for two consecutive years; I
was most valuable researcher of the Philippine Association for
Advancement of Science; I was UP outstanding researcher chosen
by the joint NSDA-UP selection committee in recognition of my
having most contribution to national development among others.
Tribute to Dr. Paulo C. Campos DLSU-Cavite
“Bakit naman ako lalaktawan?”

When I became chairman, the Rockefeller Foundation

and the China medical Board were just too eager to
help the medical board. I was generously supported
by both. A third organization was the British
Commonwealth Fund which was also generously
supporting me. As I mentioned, I sent many young
budding doctors to the United Kingdom and who later
became pillars in the vocational and professional life
in medicine in the country. After I left up I exerted
more effort in my research activities and became very
active in the research programs in the country.
Tribute to Dr. Paulo C. Campos DLSU-Cavite
“Bakit naman ako lalaktawan?”

I became involved in the National Research

Council. I became director of the medical
division of the National Research Council of the
Philippines for, over ten years, and the last five
years, aside from being director,
I was president of NRCP (excerpts from Paulo C.
Campos M.D. The Story of my Life- An
Autobiography; Edited by Paulo Crispin Ll.
Campos III; Emilio Aguinaldo College Printing
Press; 2008).

QUESTIONS TO PONDER

Which hat is the best fit for Dr.

Paulo C. Campos? Why? Would

you also wear that hat?

Why? Why not?

Dr. Paulo Campos

- The Emilian Culture Formation Course; Priscilla R. Moriones,
Juanito L. Perando; 2018 (EAC-Cavite Research Journal)
ANSWER

The Doctor of Medicine's hat is the cap that best represents Dr. Campos. His wisdom,
expertise, and skills influenced us much, as he established many hospitals and institutions
dedicated to teaching and focusing on the profession of medicine, the first of its type in the
country. The hat of the doctor of medicine, or as we choose to call it, the hat of education,
represents the power of knowledge. How he used his knowledge, insight, and life successes to
raise the level of science and education in our country encouraged me to perform at least as
well as he did in the future, if not better. Dr. Paulo C. Campos may be best suited to graduating
and wearing a graduation cap from a well-known university in the Philippines. It was also from
there that he began to receive such honors. I'd wear a hat like that since it will give me with
numerous opportunities to assist me reach my objectives in the future.

which is why he became an educator to pass on his knowledge to the next generation. He is
dedicated to his vocation as a physician. He understands his responsibilities and how to
better the neighbourhood in which he once resided. He puts others' needs ahead of his own,

What is the meaning of

Excellence to you as students?

As a group?

- The Emilian Culture Formation Course; Priscilla R. Moriones,

Juanito L. Perando; 2018 (EAC-Cavite Research Journal)
ANSWER

Pursuing excellence necessitates giving it your all. It is vital that you do your best and submit high-
quality work as a student. This not only increases your visibility, but it also enhances your confidence
and self-esteem, which leads to better grades, repaying your parents, and being proud of yourself.
Excellence in a group is described as the ability to achieve excellence while working together and
lifting one another up. Nobody should be left behind, and everyone should be willing to share and
take. We can use this positive thinking to influence and protect one another if we can help one
another. It implies that you strive to be the finest version of yourself and to accomplish the best results
possible. Attempting perfection necessitates giving it your best. It is vital that we give it our all and
perform our responsibilities as students to the best of our abilities. This will increase your self-esteem
and respect, leading to appreciation, good grades, and other benefits. Excellence refers to what you
achieve as a group. It might be your greatest or worst achievement. True excellence is characterized
by supporting and encouraging one another.
