Advanced Concrete Design Term

Project

.
Light Storage Warehouse

Design Criteria:
1-Design Codes:
 All loads were applied to the all structure elements of the building in accordance with
ASCE 7-98 Code and the ACI 318-02 Code.
 All loads were chosen to be suitable to the building usage (Light Storage Warehouse) and
suitable to its location (Detroit – Michigan).
 All concrete sections for all structure elements were designed in accordance with the
ACI 318-02 Code using the load factor design method.
 All the structure elements were designed to fulfill the deflection and serviceability limits
of the ACI 318-02 Code

2- Structural Material Specifications:

 Steel bars used for all elements of the building are of grade 60.
 The grade of concrete used for all structure elements of the building is 4000 Psi.

3-Design Loads:
a. General:
 Wind Load was calculated as per ASCE 7-98.
 Seismic Load was calculated as per ASCE 7-98.

b. For Roof Slab:

I. Dead Loads:
 Own weight of the slabs.
 Water isolating membrane is single ply sheet of load 1 psf as per ASCE 7-98.
 Thermal insulation membrane of load 1 psf as per ASCE 7-98.
 Cement Tiles of load 16 psf as per ASCE-7-98.
 Concrete parapet of thickness 12 in. and height of 5 ft.

II. Live Loads:

 Roof live load was calculated as per ASCE 7-98.
 Rain load was calculated as per ASCE 7-98.
 Snow load was calculated as per ASCE 7-98.

c. For Floor Slab:

I. Dead Loads:
 Own weight of the slab.
 1 in. concrete fill finish of load 12 psf as per ASCE 7-98.
 Walls of Masonry Grouted Units of thickness 12 in. and density of 140 pcf as per
ASCE 7-98

II. Live Loads:

 Live load for light storage warehouse calculated as per ASCE 7-98

3-Design Assumption:
a. General:
 Structural analysis was performed according to the ACI 318-02 Code using a
combination of manual calculations and computer analysis models.
 Each structure element was designed to resist safely (according to the ACI 318-02
Code) the straining actions subjected to it according to the structural analysis.
 The building was checked to safely resist the lateral loads applied to it.
 Lateral stability of the building is provided through the framing action between the
columns and the beams.

b. Roof Slab:
 The structure system of the roof slab was chosen to be slab with beams.
 The roof slab was designed to support safely all the dead loads applied to it as being
specified in the design loads in addition to the biggest of the live load or the rain load or
the snow load according to ACI 3189-02.
 Edge beams were designed to support safely the straining actions subjected to it as a
member of the roof slab in addition to parapet load.

c. Floor Slab:
 The structure system of the floor slab was chosen to be slab with beams.
 The floor slab was designed to support safely all the dead loads applied to it as being
specified in the design loads in addition to the live load.
 Edge beams were designed to support safely the straining actions subjected to it as a
member of the floor slab in addition to the wall load.

d. Columns:

.
 Columns were designed to support safely the reactions from the roof and floor slabs in
addition to their own weight.

e. Footings:
 Footings on axis 3 to 5 were designed as isolated footings.
 Footings on axis 1 & 2 in addition to footings on axis 5 & 6 were designed as strap
footings.

Relative Stiffness Between Beams and Slab:

For interior panel:

From the symmetry, the relative stiffness in both directions is the same.
