4 USED TO

USED TO + INFINITIVE
To talk about a habit in the past which is no longer true in the present.
When I was a child I used to visit my grandparents at weekends.

In the negative or interrogative, remember to write USE TO

Did you use to eat lots of candies when you were little?
No, I didn't use to do it. I liked ice cream instead

WOULD + INFINITIVE
Also to talk about habits in the past which are no longer true in the present.
When I was a child I would visit my grandparents at weekends.


stative verbs:
We don't use WOULD with

Verbs to express feelings: Agree, think, believe, understand...

When I was 20 I used to disagree with my parents most of the times.


NOT I would disagree with my parents.

Verbs to express likes/dislikes: like, love, hate, prefer...

When I went to university I used to dislike my maths teacher.


NOT I would dislike my maths teacher.

Possession / Necessity verbs: have, possess, belong, need, want...

As a child I didn't use to have as many toys as other children.


NOT I wouldn't have.
NOTE that as it is in the negative we say: I didn't USE, not USED

TO BE + USED TO + VERB-ING
To talk about things which are normal, things we are accustomed to.
I am used to getting up early every day.

In the negative or interrogative, USED TO remains the same, we do not need to


remove the D:

Were you used to having dinner at 9.00 pm when you lived with your parents?
Are you used to doing the homework in the evenings?

TO BE USED TO + NOUN
With the same meaning
I am used to this weather since I have lived here my whole life.

GET USED TO
To talk about things you are not still familiar with, but you are in the process.
I moved to Italy one month ago, I'm still getting used to living here.

GET USED TO + NOUN


With the same meaning.
I'm getting used to the food in this country. (I'm still not used to it, but eventually, I will)
