chapter l A. Background of Study
Language is some tool uses someone to communicate with other.
Language is some important tool for human to understand and share
the statement with other. That true, A language has a symbol, sound,
and signs. In addition, the language has also has function as a result
for an self-expression. Language becoming a person who could not be
separated from human life in any terms, because every human needs
language to carrying out statement in his mind. Language is a system
of communication in speech and writing used by people a particular
country. The used by humans of a system of sound and word to
communicate.English language is international language, as one of
the target languages that students in a school have to learn English
because English is first foreign languages that teach at school.
Language is tool of communication used by the human being
community in their interaction. As people know, English is
international language. So, to communicate each other in the world
people should Know English. In Indonesia, English has been chosen
as the first-foreign language in school curriculum. It is because of
simple reason the English plays in important role in the international
world. Our goverment hope that it can be a mean functions to acquire
science and technology. Therefore, Indonesian people will become
intellectual and skillful person who are ready to face both national
and international development2 Language is some tool uses someone

Therefore, Indonesian people will become intellectual and skillful
person who are ready to face both national and international
development2country like Indonesia, the reality to switch one
language and another is accepted as quite normal. Code-switching or
code mixing is a common Phenomenoun among bilingual or
multilingual society. 3English is an international is usually switched
eith Indonesia. People sometimes switch without hesitation, and often
without extensive thought,Indonesia is a multilingual country. Many
languages are spoken within the country, and many people in the
country use more that one lnguage.4 Almost all Indonesian people
like switching from Indonesian to English or the contrary from
English to Indonesian. Bilingualism and multilingualism are common
in Indonesia.So. As a multilingual society as expressed before above,
Indonesians do not find it hard to break free from this spoke habit.
That sure, It happens because there are situation that cause because of
different cultures and situations so a switch and mix language in some
situation is natural.Sure, this also takes in teaching learning process at
school. Primarily some teacher who is the leading culprit in the
learning process that does not require alternately replaced language
use or there are code-switching and code-mixing in teaching language
process.The switching code is a popular phenomenoun in our life.
Many people, especially students, teachers, executives change over
words, phrase, clause, or sentences of English and Indonesian in their
utterances. Code is a language or varietyof a language.5It can be said
that people use language as code to explain their ideas in other to be
more understandable. Code switching is different from code mixing.
It refers to the use of two languages in the same sentences or
discourse. It means that the substitution of words, phrase, or
sentences in a single speech even. For example, a person who said, “I
want to eat” and “saya ingin makan” in a single utterance. Speakers
of more than one Language are known from their ability to code
switch their languages during communication. This occurs when
bilinguals substitute a word or phrase from one language with a word
or phrase from another language.6In classroom learning activities,
one thing that can drive teachers wild is when their students are
apparently unwilling to use English in the classroom, especially
during communicative activities. This is often seen as an example of
student/teacher failure. After all, if the students are not using English
everyone is wasting time. However, there are many understanda

In Indonesia is a multilingual country. Many language and people are
spoken within country and use more that one language.Bilingulalism
and multilingualsm are comon in Indonesia. So, Indonesia lns do not
find hard to break free from spoke habit because the situation,
cultures are different. Primarily some teacher in the school theacher
who is the leading culprit in the learning process does not requere
alternately replaced language use are code-switching and code-mixing
in English learning process.The switching code is a popular
phenomenoun in our life.

3. Review thesis This thesis is written by Salmawati and the tittle is "AN ANALYSIS
OF CODE SWITCHING AND CODE MIXING IN TEACHING
ENGLISH PROCESS AT SMAN 5 PINRANG" written in 2020. This
thesis discuss about language, how important the language and how
use code-switching and code-mixing.and in this first chapter, we have
written a background that matches the title, but in it there is a lot
more about language than code-switching and code-mixing, so the
reader is a little mistaken in concluding the background of the
problem.This first chapter discusses language a lot, but the reader
understands that the problem is still general which should be entitled:
"AN ANALYSIS OF CODE SWITCHING AND CODE MIXING IN
TEACHING ENGLISH PROCESS AT SMAN 5 PINRANG" It is
clear that this title is more specific in discussing probem at SMAN 5
PINRANG.

Points of chapter l A. Background of the Study

People generally think that speak English with their local


language accent
is not a matter but it is different for some English students in
Barru. They
sometimes felt shy to speak English because people (from other
region)
frequently laugh their accent. Some of them also have a problem
to pronounce
the English words. The researcher even found a teacher who
stopped his students‟
conversation in the class because the student was difficult to
pronounce some
words and made the other one did not understand what he said.
Accents can
provide a new image for the specificity that contains of dick
speak. It is viscosity
of the expected individual does not result in a different
interpretation among the
delivery of the receiver and the recipients themselves. (Ratna,
2016).

Accent refers to the way in which the speakers producing


different sound
of speech. Bugis-Barru is known as a one of the regions in the
Bugis tribe area
that has a strong/heavy accent. Related to that, the researcher
interested to
research how the students from Bugis-Barru tribe speak English
because when
the people from this tribe speak in other language they
sometimes use their local
accent.

B. Problem Statement
Related to the statement above on the background, the
researcher
addresses these following problem statements as follow: “How
does the accent of
Bugis influence the student‟s speaking skill in terms of
pronunciation?”

C. Objectives of the Research


Related to the problem statement above this particular study
objectives as
follow: To describe the influence of the accent of Bugis in the
student‟s
speaking skill in terms of pronunciation.

2. summary This “skripsi” is divided into five respective chapters:


Chapter I presents introduction which consist of background of
the study, this is the main part of fives chapter as in this chapter
the writer shows his acceptable and considerable reason why he
runs his paper, then it also presents the limitation and
formulation of the problem, the significance of the study, the
method of the study and the last is the organization of writing.

In chapter II the writer explains theoretical framework which


consist of concept of accent.
In chapter III the writer explains detail descriptive Profile of
English Education Department in which he runs his research.

Chapter IV provides first, research methodology in this chapter,


she concerns with the purpose of research, place and time of
research, population and sample of research, the method and
instrument of research, the research procedure and the technique
of data analysis. And second, research finding, in this sub-
chapter: description of data only and the interpretation of data.

Chapter V is conclusion, Related to the previous chapter, the


researcher found finally some
points after doing some activities of data collection that become
the causal
influence Bugis Accent toward speaking English interference on
the pronunciation
in English conversation, as follows:
1. The different phoneme produce between Bugis native and
English
native in some areas of phoneme that caused the subjects who is
the native
speaker of Kabupaten Bone sometimes difficult to pronounce
English
words.
2. Bugis-Bone Accents is a strong/heavy accent
3. The Environment
a. The subjects usually used their mother language (Bugis) in
casual
conversation with their family, friends, and people who live
around them.
b. The subjects used to speak the language with their family,
friends, and
people who live around them with Bugis accent. Based on the
information
above, the results show that the different produce in some areas
of
phoneme between Bugis native speaker and English native
which
interfere the students‟ English pronunciation in speaking or
conversation,
the subjects‟ environment, and the subjects‟ natural habit of
speaking their
first language.
