Urban Planning

Chapter-4
Pioneers in planning theories;
Arturo Soria Y Mata (1844 to 1920)
Background:
Arturo Soria Y Mata was an internationally important Spanish urban planner whose work remains
highly inspirational today. He is most well known for his concept of the Linear City. He studied the
civil engineer career, but he didn't finish it.
Concept of Linear city
The continuing expansion of cities at the periphery the urban sprawl has pushed the country side
further from the urban population. To overcome this Soriya Y Mata in 1882 profounded the theory
of Linear City-- La Cludael Linear. It was an urban plan for an elongated urban formation. The city
would run parallel to a river and be built so that dominant wind would blow from the residential
areas to industrial strips.
He based his proposals on the principle that transport route should determine the city design and
that the city should be designed in advance of development. The form he proposed was a wide and
nearly straight spine road down, the centre of which runs railways, access to development was
obtained by straight roads meeting the spine road at right angles. Ultimately Mata envisioned the
connection of existing cities by series of linear towns the land within the triangle so formed to be
used for agriculture of Industries.

. The sectors of a linear city would be:

1. a purely segregated zone for railway lines,

2. a zone of production and communal enterprises, with related scientific, technical and
educational institutions, ,
3. a residential zone, including a band of social institutions, a band of residential buildings and a
"children's band",
4. a park zone, and
5. an agricultural zone with gardens and state-run farms (in the Soviet Union).
As the city expanded, additional sectors would be added to the end of each band, so that the city
would become ever longer, without growing wider. It has both advantages and disadvantages
depending upon the size of the city.
