Where have you been?

- Day 2
Grade: 1st
Lesson Type: Whole Group

Objective: Students will be able to identify cities they


have visited on a virtual map of Florida.

Standard(s): SS.1.G.1.1- Use physical and political/cultural


maps to locate places in Florida.
LAFS.1.RI.1.2- Identify the main topic and
retell key details of the text.

Materials: -Wifi
-The text
-Markers
-Illustration of a map

Procedures 1. Gather students to the carpet and introduce


the book “F is for Florida” by Christin Farley
and Stephanie Miles.
2. Give a short summary of Florida and ask simple
questions.
3. Read aloud the book to the students. Make sure
to show each page to the students.
4. When read aloud is complete, have students
turn and talk to a partner about their
thoughts on the book.
5. Have a group discussion about thoughts on the
book.
6. Have a brain break by playing a video on Go
Noodle.
7. Introduce next class activity by putting an
outline of Florida on the board.
8. Explain to students that they will be asked a
series of questions about places in Florida
that will be marked on the map.
9. Question 1: Where do you live in Florida?
Green dot. (Have a few students share since
all live in the same area).
10. Question 2: What places have you
traveled to? Blue Dot.
11. Question 3: Where were you born in
Florida? Yellow dot.
12. Question 4: What places have you heard
of in Florida? Purple dot.
13. Question 5: Where do you have family in
Florida? Pink Dot.
14. Mark extra places with a grey dot. (Ex:
UCF, School, famous areas, etc…)
15. Wrap up the lesson by going over what
Florida is, the book that was read, what facts
they learned, and the activity they completed
as a class.
