Letter of Motivation

Specialization in a Graduate Program is a very important phase in a student's life. Ones entire career is
highly influenced by this single decision. In my case the thought process for this decision was not a day
or two, but rather a properly planned and analyzed thinking ahead over the last 3 years. Being a
developing country it still needs proper guidance and advanced technologies as well as skilled
manpower specially in the cast field of Materials. This has been a huge motivating factor for me to
pursue my graduate studies and provide a helping hand to the growth of my country.

My fascination with Materials can be traced back to my school days where I often observed the news on
television regarding the inventions of diverse and unique materials. The new materials that were being
created piqued my interest in the subject about which I commenced reading extensively afterwards. My
high curiosity made me pursue the knowledge on materials more voraciously. When I was in 7th
standard my father bought me a book which mentioned the achievements and contributions of some of
the best known scientists of the world allowing a strong inclination towards mathematics and science
which proved decisive in choosing a career in field of Materials. I have set my goal to be a Scientists just
like well known, honorary and esteemed Scientists from India Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam. I want to leave a
mark with my work in the world of Materials and get included in the list of esteemed Scientists across
the globe in the decades to come. Materials Science and Metallurgy being clubbed together in Indian
universities, making Metallurgical Engineering a mandatory choice to pursue the desired knowledge on
Materials.

Given my interest in the field of materials, I decided to pursue my bachelors in same field at collegiate
level. I have since taken every opportunity to read about the advances in our understanding of this
particular subject, supplemented by specialist seminars at Indus University and a National conference,
Recent Advances in Process Metallurgy (R.A.P.M 2017) at MSU Baroda. I visited many industries and
laboratories like Electrotherm, TCR Advance Engineering laboratory, Institute of Plasma Research, etc. to
deepen the practicality of my field in day today life. My first project work was on the Recovery of Copper
from its Sulphate waste, under the guidance of Department of Physical Metallurgy, Indus University. We
refined Copper using domestic raw materials like Neem leaves extract, Borax, oil and few more. I used to
gamer the important information on the different kinds of methodology for economical and
environmental friendly results. After working on the project for 4 months the project was completed. At
the end of third year, American Society of Materials International organized a 5 day event, Materials
Camp and my department was responsible for the same. Knowing my enthusiasm and passion in the
field, I was appointed as an organizing team in charge from the students. The event was a huge success
and my team was praised for our work. Seeing my obsession over materials, Head of Metallurgy
Department, Mr. Mrutyunjay Panigrahi gave me an opportunity for the final year project in esteemed
engineering institute in India, Indian Institute of Technology, Varanasi. After conducting literature survey
in the search of trending topic, I finalized Fabrication of Multifunctional Graphene based Super
Capacitor as my project topic. Through this project I was able to gain a lot of experience in research area
and this project was a huge success. It also received the Best Projects of the Year award from my college
and was selected in the International Conference ADMAT September 2019, Hyderabad where project
abstract got published in the conference journal. I gave a presentation on my project work in another
International Conference FiMPART December 2019, Ahmedabad.

Academics do not take all of my existence. I dabble in painting, sketching, drawing and other art-craft
related activities. Art inspires me and makes me feel refreshed. I regularly participate in competitions
and often do win them. I am also a proficient and decisive sportsman. I love playing basketball and
regularly practice it. I had opportunity to represent my college in many tournaments; we were runner up
in DAIICT basketball tournament held in year 2017. I was also awarded as Student of the Year 2019 along
with achievements in other extra curricular activities. I do enjoy reading finding the fantasies like Harry
Potter, Eragon, The Name of the Wind, Hobbit, and Lord of the Rings etc very fascinating.

Seeing the high standard requirements for German universities, after completing bachelors I decided
to broaden my skill set and further deepen my knowledge on failure of materials, so I took a Non
Destructive Testing’s Level 2 certification course in Ultrasonic testing, Liquid Penetrant testing,
Magnetic Particle testing and Radiographic testing. I also went through free complimentary training on
Failure Analysis of Materials during this NDT course. This allowed me to firmly grasp the problems and
the reasons in material failure in present working conditions and what solutions we can implement to
avoid such mishaps.

The University that one selects is just as important as the decision to study further itself. My decision to
pursue Masters study in Germany was due it's high exposure to students, safe for International
students, especially Technical University of Darmstadt offering masters program of Material Science as
higher education, because a degree from your University is recognized worldwide and as a result,
International students who study here enjoy successful and prospectus career, and also this program
resembles my study of interest and technical skills I gained till now. Studying in this University for
Material Science will give me unique range of expertise and experience which in turn will be very
beneficial for my career. What attracted my to this university is it’s instructional and research facilities
and the industrial collaborations. It is amongst the best graduate schools for Material Science. Going
through program brochure and details on the website, I realize that your University is considered one of
the best University with great opportunities involved in work and research for students. An excellent
facility for studies and very high caliber faculties have motivated me to chose this University. I would
love taking some extra beneficial courses related to my field of study as they can broaden my
knowledge as well as enhance my skills. I am confident that my academic background along with some
outside classroom practical research experience gives me maturity that I want to succeed as an ideal
overseas student as well as my future career development. After researching quantity of education
available at your University, it has been one of the major factors that have motivated me to pursue this
program, as opportunities available at your University will allow my potential to grow multiple bounds.
Research for me is of paramount importance. Universities in Germany teach multitudes of subjects,
delivering deep knowledge in order to investigate empirically. Undoubtedly the masters program of
Material Science atyour University would be ideal as it is taught as a separate and highly specialized
discipline. And the recent research by junior Professor Ulrike Kramm on energy technology for low
temperature fuel cell and research work of Professor Michael Saliba on Wonder Material for clean
energy storage align with my past Project work in this field and has further encouraged me to pursue
my masters program at Technical University of Darmstadt. After completing my Masters degree
program, I expect to take a couple of years experience in Germany and then return to my country. After
completing the program at your University, I am very sure I will be equipped with the skills needed to
achieve considerable knowledge and make a huge impact in this vast field. Materials Engineer with
expertise skills are always in high demand.

I would be grateful to you, if I am accorded the opportunity to pursue this masters study program at
Technical University of Darmstadt and I am looking forward to join your esteemed University.
