COVID-19 pandemic has tremendous impacts on our world and has caused
significant disruptions in our lives. For more than two years, this pandemic altered our
daily routines and lives especially students such as me who must meet the demands of
the academe among others. A slew of extracurricular activities, tests, and assignments
make me feel stress as a student. Without my notice, excessive and sustained stress may
lead to burnout or even worst, nervous breakdown. As my stress mounts, I start to lose
interest in and motivation for the role I take on in the first place, being a college student.
Last week in our Physical Education: Fitness Exercises subject, our professor
required us to perform seven physical fitness tests namely standing long jump, sit and
reach ,sit ups ,chair push-ups, 50-meter sprint or dash, 3-minute step test and 15-minute
walk and run. At first, it appears that I was not invested in doing those exercises since my
totality was not there, not even my presence of mind or attention. Since it was our last
subject starting from 6 pm and would finish until 8 pm, and I must race against the clock
to meet the deadline in our second seatwork on our Psychological Statistics subject that
day at 11:59 pm, I already feel fatigue in my physical and mental state. Nonetheless, I did
them for the sake of and only to meet the requirement for the subject.
The first thing I did before I started doing the physical activity was making sure that
I wear proper P.E. uniform especially the jogging pants and rubber shoes. Although we
were doing the tests at home since we conducted our classes online, we are required by
our professor to wear appropriate outfit for doing the tasks. Due to some things running
through my head such as preparing for my weekly classes and other personal things I
think of, I forgot the reminders regarding the requirement of wearing appropriate outfit in
doing the task. Being fortunate enough on that day, I was already wearing jogging pants
and I was also wearing T-shirt as always. Hence, I just wore rubber shoes. Next, I bought
an index card to a nearby school supplies store in our area and I wrote in it the seven
physical fitness tests to record my results and performed warm-up stretching.
Since it was the first fitness test needed to be performed, I did first the standing
long jump. Before doing the first test, I was finding a place where I could jump at the
maximum extent and that place was in our bedroom area. Then, I placed a tape measure
in the floor, and I taped it in the ground. Being conscious about falling or slipping, I also
put mats on the floor. As I set things up, I started doing the test and I accumulated 161
centimeters or 1.61 meters for my first try and 165 centimeters or 1.65 meters for my
second try.
Next, I performed the sit and reach which I garnered 20 centimeters for my first try
and 22 centimeters for my second try. After the second test, I did sit-ups which only should
be done in first try, and I got 11 counts. Before doing the fourth fitness test, I get a
monobloc chair since I would need it. Then, I performed chair push-ups and getting same
number of counts like the sit-ups. After this, I asked my father if the measurement of the
street starting at our home going outside would measure at least 50 meters since it is
impossible for me to measure it in the middle of the dark. As he confirmed, I brought my
mobile phone to use stopwatch. Doing the 50-meter sprint, I recorded 8 seconds in exact.
For the second to the last fitness test, I performed the 3-minute step test in an
abandoned neighboring house since it was the best place where I could execute the tests
in an appropriate manner. Before doing the test, I set the timer in my phone, one for the
actual test which was 3 minutes, and the other was a minute for me to take my pulse rate
after doing the activity. Doing that fitness test, I accumulated 76 beats per minute. Last
but not the least, I performed 15-minute walk and run. Since our home was not that
sizeable to do a 15-minute walk and run, I decided to conduct it at our backyard although
the lighting was not enough for me to have a proper view of the ground where I must walk
and run with. In spite of this and other hurdles, I managed to acquire 40 meters.
Before doing the physical fitness tests, the only thing in my mind was to do them
all and finish them for the sake of requirement. However, during the conduct of the fitness
test, I get used in doing the exercise and finish them not only to have good marks for my
Physical Education: Fitness Exercises subject but also to have a break time from the
monotony of doing my seatwork all day. After doing all the physical fitness tests, I felt a
bit of zest instead of weariness and fatigue which made me pumped up for the rest of the
day and motivated to finish and pass my seatwork on time. Instead of being more
stressed, I felt relieved and energized. This made me come up to a realization that I just
needed a healthy pause, doing a few fitness exercises or at least stretching although I
am not that kind of athletic person.
Students’ bustling schedules might sometimes take over their peaceful mood when
they are racing against the clock to achieve the output or project deadlines. Worse yet,
prolonged stress and negativity can occasionally be like COVID-19, leaking without their
notice. Their social life, in addition to your home and school, may be affected. Although
the pandemic limits us in going outside, it should not hinder us to stay fit and have an
active lifestyle. All in all, everyone must bear in mind that there is still a chance to get out
of the nightmare which is the pandemic and the physical and health concerns it brings,
and it is through performing physical activities at the expanse of our homes
