A set of words that is complete in itself is called a sentence. Jumbled words are not arranged in
a proper order. Hence, it doesn’t make complete sense. Therefore, these words are re-arranged
so that it expresses a complete thought or makes complete sense. Every new sentence starts
with a capital letter.
For example –
Jumbled words - They/in/Thailand/rice/a/of/lot/grow
Correct order - They grow a lot of rice in Thailand.
TOPIC 2 – PUNCTUATION
1) Full – stop( . ) : It is placed at the end of a complete sentence.
For example – My father promised to take me on a trip to the zoo.
2) Question – mark ( ? ) : It is placed at the end of a question.
For example – Will you be able to help me complete this work?
3) Exclamation – mark ( ! ) : It is used in a sentence which expresses strong emotion. It is
placed within a dialogue or at the end of an outcry.
For example – Oh no! I lost my purse.
What a rude fellow!
4) Comma ( , ) – It is used to show a separation of ideas or elements within a sentence.
For example - Suzy wanted to invite Rahul, Manish, Riya and me for her birthday party.
The child, wearing a white frock, looked like an angel.
All new sentences start with a capital letter.
All proper nouns are written in capital letters.
‘I’ and ‘God’ are always written in capital letters.
Exercise A) Punctuate the following sentences. Use capital letters where necessary.
a) Wow what a wonderful painting
e) My friend who was upset with me yesterday sat quietly next to me in class
Ans. My friend, who was upset with me yesterday, sat quietly next to me in class.
h) Make sure you complete your work eat dinner quickly and go to bed early
Ans. Make sure you complete your work, eat dinner quickly and go to bed early.
Exercise B) Rewrite the following sentences using correct punctuation and capitalization.
a) can you ask suzan to pick up the book i wanted from that shop
Ans. Can you ask Suzan to pick up the book I wanted from the shop?
Ans. The song I heard at Mark’s house last night, was awesome.
