Instruments

Music Lesson Plan

Title: Habitat                       Grade Level:  1st 

Source: Dr. McConkey

Materials needed:

Song

CD player/speaker

Pictures of animals and corresponding instruments being played to represent the animals played
in the song  

Procedure:

A.S: What kind of animals live in the jungle?

1. Introduce students to listening by telling them that there is some music that will be played
and to think of what animal comes to mind when listening.
2. Play music
3. Once the first sound comes on, allow students to listen 
4. Explain that it was a djembe drum, and ask what animal comes to mind with that sound. 
5. Gorilla or Elephant > show elephant picture and allow students to pat the ground to the
drums
6. Listen for a high instrument
7. Ask what instrument that was and show a picture of monkeys which is represented by the
high pitch
8. That instrument was a xylophone and allow students to chose a movement for monkeys
9. Listen for the next instrument, explain that it is made of metal, show a picture, and tell
students that it is a steel pan that represents birds and show a parrot. 
10. Allow students to choose a movement for the parrots
11.  Drums will play again and they will listen for last instrument
12.  Explain that last instrument is a Flute and represents geckos
13. Show students a picture of the gecko and with their hand have them act out skurring and
stopping
14.  Play music from the beginning and have students act out in order
a. Drums: elephant/gorilla (pat their chest or the ground and act like those animals)
b. Higher xylophone music: Monkeys (act like monkeys)
c. Metal/Steel Pan: Birds (act like birds)
d. Drums again
e. Flutes: Geckos (skurry and stop)

What was that instrument called?

What was the geckos' music?

What did the steel pan represent?
